Bockraden denotes both a district with several farmers from Ibbenbüren in the Tecklenburger Land region as well as an incision in the Schafberg massif near Ibbenbüren, which is generally known as the Bockradener Graben . The district has 4,608 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2020).

location

The district of Bockraden is bordered by the Dickenberg in the west and by the Schafberg in the east. Both are districts of Ibbenbüren as well as parts of the Schafberg plateau. To the south of Bockraden, on the slope of the Schafberg, the city center of Ibbenberen follows. The area of the municipality of Mettingen with its district Schlickelde begins north of Niederbockraden .

In the area around Ibbenbüren, however, northern areas of downtown Ibbenbüren and western parts of the Schafberg are often understood as belonging to Bockraden, so that some residents of the inner city and the Schafberg also refer to themselves as Bockraden.

Bockradener Graben

The most striking sign of Bockraden is the aforementioned Bockradener Graben, a geological depression with a width of about 2 km that divides the Schafberg massif into two parts. This valley incision rises to the south and in the extreme south almost reaches the level of the Schafberg and the Dickenberg (Oberbockraden). This southern section is called Glücksburg or Glücksberg . The steep road of the same name leads in a few curves into the valley towards Ibbenbüren. The northern flat part of the trench, which is almost at the level of the surroundings, is called Niederbockraden.

Mining

Many relics point to the earlier coal mining in Bockraden. The Beustschacht, a former shaft that mined here in the 19th century, is an important relic of this.

In the Bockradener Graben is the Bockradener Schacht, which belongs to the Ibbenbüren mine . It is primarily used to ventilate the pit. In Bockraden, anthracite coal was mined at great depths in seams 53 and 54 between 2011 and 2018 .
