The Bodelschwingh tunnel is a canal named after the former finance minister Ernst von Bodelschwingh the Elder in the Uffeln district of Ibbenbüren . The unusual name of the tunnel goes back to an unfinished tunnel project of the Ibbenbüren coal mine , from which only the ditch called the Rösche tunnel was completed.

history

After extensive survey and experimental work of deposit ratios of mine Buchholz was considered the pit to sink . For this purpose, a new tunnel should drain the pit . Ernst August Graf von Beust took up a plan from 1818: to drive a tunnel from as deep a point as possible, for example from the Holy Sea , into the coal mountains, in order to develop the seams at great depth . Since the need was not yet given at the time, the plan was initially not pursued any further.

In 1842 an analysis showed that artificial dewatering would cost 361,369  thalers , while a tunnel solution would only cost 181,335 thalers. The Holy Sea, the mill in Ostenwalde , the Ems and the mill in Dreierwalde came into question as suitable locations for driving . The starting point in Ostenwalde turned out to be the best solution. Construction of the ditch began in 1843. As in 1852, the Hanoverian Western Railway was built through Ibbenbueren, it was decided that tunnel project in favor of closer to the railway situated mining fields to finish. The tunnel rose was 2943 meters long and had reached the starting point.
