Hans Georg Röhrs (born October 15, 1932 in Quakenbrück ) is a German mining engineer and mining historian .

Above all , he dealt intensively with the Ibbenbüren coalfield and its history, but also with ore mining in the region. The standard work is the continuation of an older work by Hubert Rickelmann , The Ibbenbürener Steinkohlenbergbau from its beginnings to the present (1983). Röhrs is also the founder of the Ibbenbüren mining museum.

Live and act

After graduating from Artland-Gymnasium in his native Quakenbrück, Hans Röhrs studied mining at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen and graduated with a degree in engineering . He then gained his first professional experience in iron ore mining in Salzgitter and Siegerland as well as in the Ruhrkohlen - Friedrich Heinrich colliery in Kamp-Lintfort .

In February 1960, he began working as a Steiger in the Ibbenbüren mine of Preussag AG Coal in Ibbenbüren (since 2008 RAG Anthrazit Ibbenbüren GmbH), where over the years he made it to the department head of the mining technical staff unit. At the end of 1989 he retired.

During his active service, Röhrs had already dealt intensively with mining in the Tecklenburger Land and Osnabrück Land . In addition to publications in specialist journals and the local press, as well as in the Osnabrücker Land home yearbooks , he wrote several books on the subject, the best-known of which is Der Ibbenbürener Steinkohlenbergbau from its beginnings to the present (1983). Röhrs wrote it as a continuation and update of the basic work from 1935 on the history of the Ibbenbüren coal mine up to the 20th century by Hubert Rickelmann. In addition to hard coal, however, ore was always the focus of his historical investigations. This resulted in the book The early ore mining and the iron and steel industry in Tecklenburger Land in 1985 . Röhrs took it even further in 1992 when he portrayed ore and coal. Mining and ironworks between Ems and Weser presented. With the smaller treatise Ibbenbürener Kleinzechen and wilde Pütts , he concluded the series of his numerous publications in 2009. According to his own statement, it should be his last publication: “I think I have dealt with the subject of mining exhaustively.” However, the following year he published the illustration 200 years of Gravenhorster ironworks .

Hans Röhrs is the founder and director of the Ibbenbüren mining museum, which has existed since 1990 and is affiliated with RAG Anthrazit Ibbenbüren GmbH. He had the idea of securing and collecting old mining machinery and equipment as early as 1981. Gradually, a fund of exhibits came together. He also helped found the Tecklenburger Land Knappenverein and has actively supported its activities ever since. For example, he was significantly involved in the design of several mining hiking trails around Ibbenbüren.

In addition to his commitment as a mining historian, he also cultivates his musical talent and works as a saxophonist and clarinetist in the big band of the Ibbenbüren city music school.

In 2010 the "father of the Ibbenbüren mining museum" and "walking encyclopedia of hard coal" was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services as a mining chronist . In November 2011, Röhrs received the 2011 honorary award from the City Marketing Association and the City of Ibbenbüren's Economic Development Agency. Another honorary award went to the Knappenverein Tecklenburger Land.

Hans Röhrs lives with his wife Ingrid in Ibbenbüren- Bockraden . The couple has four grown children.
