Ibbenbüren coal field

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ibbenbürener hard coal district is located in the northwest of North Rhine-Westphalia in the Tecklenburger Land region . It includes the Ibbenbürener Bergplatte near Ibbenbüren , the Piesberg near Osnabrück and the Hüggel near Hasbergen . Both of the latter are in Lower Saxony .

geology

Due to the Bramscher Pluton , the layers of the Upper Carboniferous and Permian , which lie deep under the earth's surface, have been raised to the surface. The heat effects of the pluton caused a strong coalification of the seams . Ores were deposited in crevices in the mountains. Mineralization can be found in the peripheral areas of the three deposits.

The carbon floe in Ibbenbüren is 14 km long in east-west and 5 km wide in north-south. It is split in two by the Bockradener Graben. Numerous anthracite coal seams are stored in the carbon nest , the western field , where mining has ended since 1979, and the eastern field , where the Ibbenbüren mine is located, where coal was mined for the last time in August 2018.

There are ore deposits in the edge zones, in which the Permian is adjacent to the carbon fiber nest, in the west field near Uffeln a small ore field that has not been mined, in the east field larger ore fields where ore mining took place in the 19th century.

Piesberg

The Haseschacht, now a museum for industrial culture

The Piesberg , a 1.9 km long in east-west and 1.2 km wide in north-south direction, large eruption of the Upper Carboniferous is located on the northern outskirts of Osnabrück . Coal mining took place here until 1898, but it was abandoned due to strong water inflows. It is not located in North Rhine-Westphalia, but is right on the border in Lower Saxony.

Today the Haseschacht with the Hasestollen shapes the image of the Piesberg mining industry. Some of these have been made drivable again and belong to the Haseschacht Museum.

Here, too, ore mining took place to a lesser extent on the edges.

Hill

The 8 km south of Osnabrück in Hasbergen lying Hüggel is 3.7 km long from east to west and 0.7 km from north to south. The mining activities here, however, were exclusively limited to ores. This mining ended around 1940 with the extensive exhaustion of the ore deposits near the surface. The hill is located 3 km east of the border with North Rhine-Westphalia and is therefore also a Lower Saxony. The Augustaschacht Ohrbeck labor education camp was later located in the former Augustaschacht .
