Local transport in Minden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The transport in Minden consists of a bus system with built-in part regional lines . The bus meeting point is the central bus station in Minden in the southern center of the city of Minden on the left bank of the Weser. The Minden (Westphalia) train station is slightly off the beaten track to the right of the Weser. Minden is the end point of the Hanover S-Bahn and the regional network NRW with every half hour RE to Bielefeld . There are also IC trains , RE trains in the direction of Braunschweig and Osnabrück, and regional trains to Nienburg / Weser (with a connection in the direction of Bremen / Hamburg ).

Minden (Westf) railway station

history

As early as 1892 there was a horse-drawn bus route from the train station to the city center. From 1893 steam trams ran to Porta in Barkhausen . At the end of the 1920s, four tram lines served the city area and the Mindener Kreisbahnen drove to the surrounding communities. From 1953 an attempt was made with trolleybuses on the overland route to Vlotho . The idea was to replace the tram with a trolleybus network. The trolleybuses drove on the right bank of the Weser to / from Holzhausen (today part of Porta Westfalica ). There was a connection to the tram in Porta by crossing the Weser at Porta Westfalica - the first actual step towards replacing the train on the left bank of the Weser. The operator was the Minden-Ravensberg electricity company . Between 1956 and 1959 all tram lines were then closed, but diesel buses were used as replacements. Due to a lack of flexibility, they had quickly said goodbye to the trolleybus; the trolleybus operation continued until 1965, the circular track ran until 1974. The only means of transport in the city and region besides the railroad was now the bus.

From the end of the 1950s, the bus network was also redesigned; the narrow streets of the city center, the Bäckerstrasse and the Scharn, as well as the market square became a pedestrian zone and should be bypassed. A first central bus station (at that time the name ZOB did not yet exist) was built in 1956 on the Domeck next to the old town hall . The local transport hub was still centrally located in the city center and the market, which had previously had several tram and bus stops, could become a pedestrian zone. In the 1970s, the new town hall was built on the site of this old central bus station, and the stops had to be relocated to the part of the city center adjacent to the south. The Mindener ZOB was built at today's location, a little on the edge of the old town.

From the central bus station there was a well-developed overland network in addition to individual city lines with lines to all surrounding cities (e.g. Espelkamp , Rinteln , Uchte , Vlotho , Bad Nenndorf ). The regional lines to the surrounding area ( Petershagen , Porta Westfalica, Hille , Bad Oeynhausen ) ran at frequent intervals. The train station was connected every 20 or 30 minutes. In the 1990s, diameter lines ran in the urban area , the most important of which were:

  • 427 : Am Grundbach - Königstraße - ZOB - Stiftstraße - Kuhlenkamp
  • 442 : Rodenbeck - Königswall - ZOB - train station - Meißen / Dombrede
  • 454 : Dützen / Häverstädt - Hohenstaufenring - ZOB - Marienglacis - Bärenkämpen
  • 456/461 : Monument Street / Bierpolschule - Marie Street - ZOB - Portastraße - Barkhausen - Porta Westfalica / Bad Oeynhausen
  • 459 : Sandtrift - Paulinenstraße - Grimpenwall - ZOB - Kaiserstraße (→ train station) - Leteln .

On August 1, 1994, the Minden-Ravensberg public transport company started an attempt to introduce a completely new, clearer route network for the region and city. However, this quickly turned out to be hardly passable and led to chaos and considerable public protests , especially in Minden due to poor planning . On February 6, 1995 the changes were completely withdrawn. There was a considerable loss of image for the transport company. Since May 2000 Minden belongs to the tariff association "Der Sechser" ( OWL Verkehr GmbH ). However, to this day, passengers from the Lower Saxony region have had to do without network services. The OstWestfalenLippe transport association, founded in 1995, only organizes regional rail transport as a special purpose association. As part of the redesign of the station forecourt, a new bus station was built on the opposite side of the station, away from the city.

Thanks to a cooperation between three modes of transport (integration of city and regional lines), it was possible to considerably improve the offer in 2000 and shorten the cycle times. The connection of line 509 (Dankersen - ZOB) to city line 442 enabled, for example, a much more frequent cycle between the train station and Rodenbeck. A high deficit of the Minden-Ravensberg transport company, which has belonged to the üstra Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe since 2002 (until 2007) and also the city of Minden, led to considerations to redesign the bus network. Finally, the model was the modern city bus system introduced in Herford in November 2003 .

Completely surprisingly, on July 10, 2005 - in the summer months with little traffic - the network of the previously very well developed city bus network was optimized and tightened (complete line reconstruction, introduction of the “Minden city bus”). Cycle times were extended and the central bus station made the end point of all lines, the previous diameter lines have ended there since then. Continuous bus connections from the train station to Königswall, the court and the comprehensive school no longer exist as planned. As a result of the line breaks, the short-haul tariff (up to four stops without transfer authorization) is only valid to a limited extent; Short trips in the city center or from the train station to Königswall became unattractive. The city buses were given the names 1 to 13 instead of the previously very confusing three-digit line numbers. Due to the rendezvous concept, up to four buses run to the station at the same time every 30 minutes. Existing partnerships between VMR and Busverkehr Ostwestfalen GmbH (BVO) and Mindener Kreisbahnen (MKB) have largely been abandoned. In some outdoor areas (Dützen, Haddenhausen ), special forms of operation ( dial-a-bus ) are used.

The new ZOB Minden on the edge of the old town (2012)

In August 2009 night buses were introduced at a special rate. Due to low demand, this offer was discontinued at the end of May 2010. In mid-2010, the VMR announced that it would cease operations on June 30, 2011 and liquidate the company. On January 19, 2011, VMR GmbH had to file for bankruptcy. The line bundle was put out to tender by the Minden-Herford transport company (mhv). From June 12, 2011 to November 30, 2019, BVO Busverkehr Ostwestfalen GmbH ( DB Ostwestfalen-Lippe Bus ), a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn AG, operated the line bundle and thus provided a large part of the local public transport in Minden. 23 newer low-floor buses of the type MAN Lion's City and almost 60 buses from subcontractors were used. In December 2018, the bundle of routes C "Minden and the surrounding area" was put out to tender all over Europe, which Transdev Ostwestfalen GmbH won with its Teutoburger Wald Verkehr brand a large part of the local public transport in Minden.

As a replacement for the bus station that was demolished for the construction of an underground car park, a new bus stop system ZOB Minden was opened at the beginning of January 2012 . Because of the many buses that approach the bus stop at the same time (system “direct connections in all directions”), there are critical space situations. There are therefore discussions and criticism in the public about the planning of the new facility.

City bus Minden

The inner-city city bus routes are characterized by clear lines and an easily noticeable cycle (30/60 minute cycle). On the weekend all lines run every 60 minutes, the RingBus lines do not run on the weekend.

The Minden city bus has been operated by Transdev Ostwestfalen GmbH with its Teutoburger Wald Verkehr (TWV) brand since December 1, 2019 . Since August 2020, 14 buses with environmentally friendly hybrid drives have been in operation.

Local transport tariffs

The Minden-Lübbecke district belongs to the Westphalian tariff association. There is no transport association in the neighboring Lower Saxony , so the S-Bahn runs there at the regular local transport tariff of Deutsche Bahn (→ Verkehrsgemeinschaft Landkreis Schaumburg ). The Lower Saxony ticket is only valid in rail transport.
