Entrance of the pedestrian tunnel in Bamberg train station

A passenger tunnel is the name given to a connecting passage under the track of a train station .

In conjunction with stairs , ramps or lifts, it enables travelers to get from the station entrance to the platforms , from the platforms to the station exit and when changing from platform to platform without having to cross tracks at rail height. Personnel tunnels also serve as underground footpaths to connect streets and squares.

In light traffic, passenger tunnels are often narrow tunnels with a minimum width of 1.5 to 2 meters so that passengers with hand luggage can pass each other. With a higher number of visitors, widths of 4 to 6 meters and with heavy traffic of 10 meters and more are created.

The pedestrian tunnel at
St. Pölten main station has been expanded into a passage.

Today, especially in larger facilities, underpasses are sometimes so wide that, in addition to the circulation routes, there is space for various shops and restaurants or entire shopping arcades . Some of them are designed as tunnel networks through to so-called " underground cities ".
