The Oberbilk underground station (until 2012 it was referred to as the Oberbilk Bf./PhilipsHalle underground station ) is a station on the Düsseldorf city railway . It is located on the first trunk line in the Oberbilk district of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf . The station north of the eponymous S- Bahn station was opened to traffic on June 15, 2002. The underground station opens up the neighboring Mitsubishi Electric Halle and the surrounding residential areas. It is served by the U74, U77 and U79 light rail lines. A link with other lines of the Düsseldorf transport consists of an aboveground station of the tram and S-Bahn already mentioned. In 2002, the number of people entering, leaving and transferring was around 15,000 to 20,000 per working day. With the exception of the two other underground stations on this route, the platforms arranged on the side are a special feature of the Düsseldorf tunnel network.
location
Route network
The underground station is located southeast of the city center in the Oberbilk district. Behind the main station, the trunk lines that run together in the inner city tunnel are divided up again. The second trunk line in the direction of Eller will be continued via the Handelszentrum / Moskauer Strasse subway station and the first trunk route via the Ellerstrasse subway station to the Oberbilk S subway station. After it has passed this, the tunnel runs underneath the railway line from Düsseldorf to Cologne and shortly thereafter reaches a ramp at the level of Kaiserslauterner Straße, after which the route is led in a slight incision to the Kaiserslauterner Straße stop.
district
The underground station itself is located in the southern area of the Oberbilk district and is located below the intersection of Oberbilker Allee / Stoffeler Straße and Siegburger Straße. A little further to the north, Kölner Straße joins the district center. It serves the surrounding residential areas in the north, west and east as well as the neighboring community elementary school Stoffeler Straße as access to the Düsseldorf light rail network.
South of the underground station is the eponymous S-Bahn station Düsseldorf-Oberbilk . Further south are the Volksgarten and the Mitsubishi Electric Halle event location . For the latter, in addition to the S-Bahn station, it takes on the main function of guiding the flow of visitors through public transport.
history
As part of the Rhein-Ruhr Stadtbahn, there have been plans for an extensive light rail network in Düsseldorf since the early 1960s. The original plan was to build trunk line 1 from Oberbilk through the Südpark to Heinrich Heine University . However, these plans were not pursued.
In 1994, work began on building the Oberbilker Tunnel in a southerly direction from the Stahlwerkstrasse ramp to the inner city tunnel. This should relieve both Kölner Straße and Stoffeler Straße and reduce the travel time on this section of the route by five minutes.
The underground station was opened to traffic on June 15, 2002 together with the tunnel on trunk line 1 .
In the course of the timetable change on January 7, 2012, the name was changed from "U-Bahnhof Oberbilk Bf./PhilipsHalle" to "U-Bahnhof Oberbilk S". This happened against the background of the renaming of the nearby multifunctional hall from the previous name "PhilipsHalle" to Mitsubishi Electric Hall in autumn 2011 .
Station complex
The underground station can be reached via escalators and an elevator, making it barrier-free . The upper level of the station is the distribution level and leads to the lower platform level. The latter has two side platforms where the lines towards Holthausen and towards Duisburg or Meerbusch / Am Seestern stop.
service
The Oberbilk S underground station is located on the first trunk line of the Düsseldorf light rail network. All light rail lines running on this route serve the underground station.
The neighboring city and the northern districts of Wittlaer , Kaiserswerth and Lohausen can be reached via the line from Duisburg . The lines branching off into the left bank of the Rhine connect the local districts of Oberkassel and Lörick as well as the neighboring town of Meerbusch . In the direction of the old town there is a connection to the central transfer point Heinrich-Heine-Allee. There you can change to several tram and bus lines and from 2014 to the third main route, the so-called Wehrhahn Line . In front of it is the Düsseldorf Hbf interchange station , which links the Stadtbahn with the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn and other regional and long-distance connections. In the further course of the first trunk line, the districts of Wersten , Holthausen and Benrath to the south , as well as the Heinrich Heine University and the Botanical Garden will be connected.
With the exception of the U79 line, which is operated jointly with the Duisburg transport company, all light rail lines are served by the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn . For example, high-floor trams of the type B80C run on the U79 line operated by the Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft . In addition, as on all other lines, type B80D wagons, also high-floor, are used here.
All lines of the Stadtbahn, tram and S-Bahn can be used with tickets of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr .
