The Volksgarten is a park from the late 19th century in Düsseldorf , which has been integrated into the Südpark since the Federal Horticultural Show in 1987 .

history

The Volksgarten was laid out during the expansion phase of the city of Düsseldorf in the course of the industrial revolution. At that time, Düsseldorf was planning to upgrade the urban area with several parks. The Ostpark , the Florapark and the Düsseldorf Zoo date from the same era.

For this purpose, the city of Düsseldorf acquired 11 hectares of land from the estate of the Count Arenberg family in 1892. The Braun und Bloem cartridge and primer factory bought the area for a factory expansion. The city expressly stipulated the layout of the Volksgarten in the purchase contract. In 1893, the then Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf issued the order to rearrange the entire site with the park, Stoffeler cemetery and allotment gardens. The Volksgarten was laid out as a near-natural park in the form it existed until 1987.

The former industrial site next door was no longer used after the Second World War. A rubble dump was created, which received no further attention.

In 1987, a year before the city's 700th anniversary, the Federal Garden Show was to take place in Düsseldorf. After the north park was ruled out as a venue due to insufficient space, it was decided to completely redesign a site consisting of the south park, the allotment garden settlement of Stoffeln, part of the Stoffel cemetery area, the Volksgarten and the neighboring wasteland. The Volksgarten became the main entrance. Large parts of the BuGa site still look like they were in 1987.

Today the Volksgarten is a 27 hectare part of the south park. In contrast to the southern part of the park, which is clearly artificially formed as a display of many plant species and landscaping, the Volksgarten is more natural.

Children enjoy the hot temperatures in the water playground. Students from the nearby Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf enjoy relaxing on the meadows with a picnic . Cabaret fans visit the cabaret stage of the comedian Manes Meckenstock in the Kurhaus , which also includes a terrace with outdoor dining and a pond with a boathouse.

The park can be accessed by local transport via the Düsseldorf Volksgarten S-Bahn station .
