The South Park is 70 hectares, the largest and most visited park in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Dusseldorf . It was created for the Federal Horticultural Show in 1987 by expanding the existing Volksgarten with new parks laid out on former wasteland. The resulting south park consists of three differently designed areas.

The Südpark is located in the Oberbilk and Wersten districts southeast of the city center . It is bounded by several important traffic routes. The railway to Cologne runs in the north , Siegburger Strasse in the east and then the Kölner Landstrasse. The Mitsubishi Electric Hall, formerly Philipshalle, is also located there . To the south, the federal motorway 46, which runs in the trough , limits the parking area. In the west, the south park borders directly on the Stoffeler cemetery . Behind it lies the Bilk district .

history

The Volksgarten , as the oldest part of the Südpark, was planned in 1893 as a park for the entire population in the south of the city (to which the southern districts such as Benrath did not yet belong at the time). With this, Düsseldorf pursued the goal of being able to offer the population in the densely populated districts nearby recreational areas. For this, the city acquired the land from the property of a noble family and planned generously with the inclusion of the Stoffeler cemetery and the groundwater lake. Construction began in 1895.

Two development spurts gave the Südpark its current appearance and shape. The original area of the Volksgarten was 27 hectares, today it is the north-western part of the south park. By the 1960s, the area south of the Volksgarten had degenerated into an ugly fallow area, with a former gravel pit, scrapyards and gardens that were difficult to see. In 1982 the first objectives for a new south park were created, and at the same time the entire green space with the Volksgarten, Stoffeln cemetery , allotment garden area and groundwater lake needed a reorganization.

After the successful application for the Federal Horticultural Show (BuGa) in 1987, extensive renovation began. Some facilities were removed after the event. In 2008, extensive maintenance measures were carried out in the south park. At that time, the city of Düsseldorf was a participant in the Entente Florale Germany competition , which it ultimately won with distinction. The Südpark was also included in the application concept. This should represent how the city deals with public parks.

The 70 hectare area is made up of three sub-areas. These are designed differently and thus offer a varied open space experience. The oldest and largest part, the Volksgarten , covers 27 hectares. To the south-east of this is the In the Gardens area with an area of 20 hectares. At the southern end, the area known as Vor dem Deich extends over 23 hectares .

Children will find enough space to play. Quiet sports are allowed on various large lawns. The park has what is probably the world's largest rope circus, designed by Conrad Roland , and two water playgrounds. The larger one, near Emmastraße, was completely renovated and reopened in summer 2019. On the western edge of the south park is a "lovingly restored" former farm - the Höfchen , also an attraction, not just for the children.

Extensive beds contain a large number of natural and ornamental plants. The complex, artfully developed over 90 years as an illusion of an ideal landscape, includes ponds with exposed bank areas, avenues, dense bushes and winding paths with surprising views of groups of trees.

In the gardens

On 20 hectares in the garden axis In the gardens, different garden themes are lined up, which are intended to provide suggestions for your own garden. A scented garden, a rock garden and small pond landscapes give an impression. In addition, there is the VHS organic garden, in which gardening takes place without chemical aids.

In front of the dike

The view of Vor dem Deich is reminiscent of the landscapes of the Lower Rhine. The former quarry pond was supplemented by three artificial lakes. Parts of it are a bird sanctuary, and the muskrat species, which were originally native to America, and the nutria have now settled here. A wide meadow of flowers and grass, which is colored differently depending on the season, adjoins the lake district.

Art in the south park

The Südpark contains a lot of sculptures and other works of art, the best known of which is probably Klaus Rinke's time field from 1986 in the entrance area of the former Federal Garden Show .

In the area of the Volksgarten there are several classic sculptures, such as the Feuerbach monument from the late 19th century and the deer with fawn by Johann Robert Korn from 1955, but also the large seated woman by Hannelore Köhler from 1977 is located here Part of the park.

The newer part of the South Park, on the other hand, has mostly abstract works of art to offer. A large number of steelworks and fountains are particularly noticeable, such as B. the fountain by Wasa Marjanov or the water harp by Christian Megert integrated into the path . The photographs by Christian Bauer and the masks by Dagmar Ojstersek-Mangone are also abstract . But figurative objects such as the giant colored pencils by Fritz Pietz can also be found in the newer part of the park.

A large number of works of art are hardly noticeable without knowledge, e.g. B. the Great Giedion by Norbert Kricke , a band of steel pipes lying in the meadow. Other works of art are, among others, the water axis by Christian Megert and Wasa Marjanov , the colored steel elements by Erwin Reusch , a stele by Ulrich Rückriem and the basalt lava gate by Erwin Heerich that stands prominently at the entrance to Werstener Straße .

The last reshaping took place during the BuGa in 1987. The current equipment of the Südpark includes:
