The Stoffeler Friedhof is a cemetery in the old south of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf . It is located in the Oberbilk district and has a size of 42 hectares . The cemetery borders the south park .

history

The Stoffeler cemetery was planned from 1876 and opened in 1879. The system followed a strict geometry that divided the area into 12 grave fields. The first expansion of the originally 17 hectare cemetery was made in 1894; the extension now also had curved paths.

A chapel was built in 1910 according to plans by the architect Johannes Radke . It contains an organ made by Romanus Seifert from Kevelaer. The chapel is now a listed building.

During the Second World War - from 1940 to 1945 - no burials took place in the Stoffeler cemetery. It was planned to transform the cemetery with the Volksgarten into a people's recreation area. After 1945, however, the cemetery continued to be used.

The last expansion took place in 1975.

Special forms of burial

The city of Düsseldorf's crematorium is also located at the Stoffeler cemetery. Therefore, the proportion of urn burials is particularly high at 70%. In addition to the classic urn burial, there is also anonymous urn burial. There is also an ash litter field.
