Berberis actinacantha is a plant from the family of Barberry (Berberidaceae). The species is only common in Chile and iscalled michay there.

Berberis actinacantha is a shrub that can reach heights of growth of up to one meter. The bark of young twigs is green to light gray or reddish brown in color, smooth or slightly hairy; in older branches it shows longitudinal cracks and edges and is often covered with numerous black dots. The thorns are leaf-like or star-shaped, the three to 18 thorn branches can be 1 to 24 millimeters long.

The leathery leaves are round, kidney-shaped, elliptical, oval, egg-shaped to lanceolate. They are 1.3 to 5.5 inches long and 0.4 to 4.5 inches wide. The leaf margin has up to 20 thorn-pointed teeth on each side. The petiole can be up to 2 inches long.

The sitting or stalked, doldy or racemose inflorescence is up to 3 centimeters long and consists of one to 14 flowers . The flowers usually contain 14 bracts , are 2 to 5 millimeters long and stalked 3 to 20 millimeters long. The spherical fruit is 5 to 6 millimeters long and contains one to five seeds that are 3 to 5 millimeters long.

It blooms in Chile from August to November and fruit from November to December.

Occurrence

Berberis actinacantha is endemic to Chile and occurs from the Región de Antofagasta south to the Región de la Araucanía at altitudes between 100 and 1900 m asl.
