Claude Gay

Claude Gay (Spanish: Claudio Gay Mouret ; born March 18, 1800 in Draguignan , † November 29, 1873 in Flayosc in the French department of Var ) was a French botanist and traveler . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Gay ".

Life

His main work is the Historia física y política de Chile (1844–1871); it contains the Botánica (1845–1854) as a botanical sub-work . For the zoological part, Gay used the help of numerous authors. While Marc Athanase Parfait Œillet Des Murs (1804-1894) worked on the birds, Antoine Alphonse Guichenot (1809-1876) worked on the reptiles and fish, Hercule Nicolet (1801-1872) on the spiders and crustaceans, Antoine Joseph Jean Solier (1792 –1851) for the beetles, Paul Gervais (1816–1879) for the millipedes and large parts of the insects, Maximilian Spinola (1780–1857) for the beaked beetles and hymenoptera and Louis Hippolyte Hupé́ (1819–1867) for the mollusks.

Since 1856 he was a member of the Académie des Sciences in Paris.

Dedication names

Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire and René Primevère Lesson honored Lesson in 1831 in the name of the red-bellied high-altitude runner ( Attagis gayi ). In 1834 Paul Gervais called the Cordillera Damsel ( Phrygilus gayi ). Jules Bourcier and Étienne Mulsant named a hummingbird species Trochilus gayi in 1846 , a name that is now a synonym for the velvet- bellied hummingbird subspecies ( Lafresnaya lafresnayi saul ( Delattre & Bourcier , 1846)). In 1856, Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte named a species of Thalasseus gayi , a name that must now be regarded as a noun nudum .

André Marie Constant Duméril and Gabriel Bibron described the head of the helmet ( Calyptocephalella gayi ) in 1841 .

Hercule Nicolet named the crested spider species Phoroncidia gayi after him in 1849 . Edmond de Selys-Longchamps named Erythromma gayi in 1876 , a name for a species of slender dragonfly . which is now run under Antiagrion gayi . In 1851 Massimiliano Spinola named a real bee species Alloscirtetica gayi .

Rudolph Amandus Philippi dedicated the legume species Vicia gayi to him in 1857 , and John Gilbert Baker dedicated the leek species Leucocoryne gayi in 1870 . The plant genus Gayophytum A. Juss is also named after Gay . from the evening primrose family (Onagraceae).
