The East Park of the state capital , with its 8.13 hectares of one of the smaller parks, the end of the 19th century in Dusseldorf emerged.

location

The listed Ostpark is located in Grafenberg , near Staufenplatz, between the Rath - Eller freight railway and Wittelsbachstraße.

history

In the middle of the 19th century only 250 people lived in Grafenberg. As part of the urban expansion and the opening of an electrified tram line, the district, known as an excursion area on the edge of the Grafenberg Forest, also became a residential area in the focus of the affluent Düsseldorf residents.

In 1898, the city council decided to build the east park in the middle of cattle pastures, far away from any development. The background for this decision is no longer comprehensible today. Plans for the International Art and Horticultural Exhibition in 1904 show the Ostpark integrated into a system of tree-lined avenues. Possibly the park should serve as an urban development element in order to accelerate the development of the area.

The Ostpark was planned by the Düsseldorf city gardener Heinrich Friedrich Adolf Hillebrecht (1846–1918), and from 1899 work began on building the park, the layout of which followed the idea of the garden city . It was the last park that Hillebrecht created.

Until the 1920s, the Ostpark was on the outskirts of the city, hardly surrounded by buildings. An originally planned lakeside restaurant was not built. It was not until the beginning of the 1930s that the residential development in the vicinity of the park was built. In 1940 Wittelsbachstrasse was almost completely built on.

In 1919 a rowing boat rental and simple catering were set up. The lake became an excursion destination for the population. Gastronomy and boat rental continued into the 1960s. After that, the offer was no longer used sufficiently to be profitable.

In the 1970s to 1990s the park overgrown. The original layout was hardly understandable any more. In 2006, the city began horticultural renovation measures to make the original complex more easily recognizable. The work was completed in July 2008 and cost a total of around 500,000 euros.

Park

The Ostpark consists of two areas:

  1. the lake, the Ostparkweiher
  2. the area with meadows and plants

The pond is bordered by a path and rows of trees. A brook used to flow into the lake; however, it has dried out. The Ostparkweiher has a water surface of 17,000 square meters.

In the center of the park there is a tree terrace that is mainly planted with linden trees. The park restaurant was to be built there.

The rest of the park is criss-crossed by arched paths with trees and bushes on the edges. The tree population is mixed, but rhododendrons are somewhat more common. Inside these arches are large lawns and groups of trees, and there is also a children's playground and a dog run.
