The Florapark (also Floragarten ) is one of the smaller parks in the state capital Düsseldorf . Its total area is 3 hectares . It is located in the old south of the city, today in the south of the city center in the Unterbilk district , not far from Friedrichstadt and Bilk .

Plant of the park

Towards the end of the 19th century, Düsseldorf became a major city as part of industrialization . As part of its expansion, Düsseldorf pursued the idea of a city criss-crossed by parks . In the course of implementing the idea, the Ostpark , the Volksgarten and the Florapark as well as the Zoological Garden ( Zoopark ) were created.

The Florapark was created around 1870 on a private initiative. To finance the park, entrance fees were initially charged. It was not until 1902 that the city of Düsseldorf took responsibility for the park itself and bought it.

Similar to the zoo, the Flora Park was also intended to represent the city and was therefore given a festival house and a palm house, as exotic animals and plants increased its reputation considerably at the time. The rest of the park's layout followed the pattern that was customary at the time: a pond, a large garden restaurant, a public concert area, lawns and flower areas as well as avenue-like walks. Since then, a playground and a dog run have been created.

On August 2, 2008, the pedagogue and trade unionist Hans-Joachim Will was painfully murdered in the park in the evening. The two perpetrators were sentenced to 10 years in prison under juvenile law.

Since the beginning of 2009, the garden department of the City of Düsseldorf has made the park more transparent and brighter. In line with the historical plans, the facility has received a new entrance on Bilker Allee. In the medium term, the Florapark is to be connected to the green space of the shopping and district center Düsseldorf Arcaden , which opened in 2008 .

Leisure activities

Today's attractions of the park are rather modest:

  • Pond
  • Monument "Adam and Eve" by Peter Breuer , 1894
  • Children's playground with mud pump and "Drachenburg"
  • Sunbathing area
  • Dog exercise area
  • Gastronomy “florabar”, opened in mid-June 2008
  • An educational tree path explains 31 different types of wood

The festival house and the palm house no longer exist. In its place is now the Karl Arnold House .
