Christian Aigens (born July 21, 1870 in Copenhagen , † March 15, 1940 ibid) was a Danish artist .

Christian Aigens, ca.1920: Landscape , oil on canvas.

He initially received his training at Kunstnernes Studieskole , a school founded by the impressionist Skagen painters . These included Peder Severin Krøyer , Laurits Tuxen , Michael Ancher and other renowned Danish artists of the time.

Aigens studied at the Copenhagen Art Academy from 1888 to 1890. In 1900 he traveled to Switzerland and 1906/07 to the Faroe Islands . In his youth he spent the summers in Skagen .

Aigens was primarily a portrait and figure painter, but he also created landscapes. He was strongly influenced by his compatriot Julius Paulsen, who was ten years his senior . Aigens belonged to an artist group around Poul Friis Nybo (1869–1929). This became known for its representation of lamplighted interiors with and without people.

Between 1908 and 1932 Aigens painted several portraits of the writer Christian Engelstoft (1876–1945). One of these portraits is in the museum in Aalborg .

Aigens found many of his motifs by observing the population in everyday life and at work. Many of his figure paintings have anecdotal features, but there are also socially realistic elements in his works.
