Laurits Tuxen
Laurits Regner Tuxen (born December 9, 1853 in Copenhagen ; † November 21, 1927 there ) was a Danish sculptor, portrait, history and landscape painter. He was a representative of the Skagen painters .
life and work
Laurits Tuxen was a son of the naval officer and director of Orlogsværftet Nicolai Elias Tuxen (1810-1891) and his wife Bertha Laura Giødvad (1815-1908). His wish was to become a marine painter. As early as 1868 he came to the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen , where he received his training in landscape and marine painting from Holger Drachmann and Vilhelm Kyhn until 1872 . In his day he was considered one of the best students alongside his friend Peder Severin Krøyer and was encouraged by his teachers to devote himself to portraiture. His first study trips took him to London, Brittany and Paris in 1875, where he stayed in Léon Bonnat's studio for further studies in the winter of 1875/76 . He had another study visit at Bonnat from May 1877 to October 1878.
In 1875 he exhibited a work for the first time at the famous Charlottenborg "Forårsudstilling" (spring exhibition) in Copenhagen:
“Fra Jyllands Vestkyst; en Flodbåd mandet med Fiskere forsøger i hårdt Vejr at nå ud til et stranded Skib "
“On the west coast of Jutland; a lifeboat manned by fishermen, tries to reach a stranded ship in bad weather. "
From 1878 to 1913 he was regularly represented with his works in the Paris Salon of the Société des Artistes Français .
In 1882 Tuxen and PS Krøyer founded the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler in Copenhagen . In deliberate contrast to the Danish art academy, young painters received an alternative training here. A preparatory class was added to this school in 1885, which was directed by Frans Schwartz (1850-1917) and Kristian Zahrtmann .
Study trips, partly also for preliminary studies for commissioned works, made him a world traveler over the years; so he was in Florence and Rome in 1879/80, in Germany and England in 1886/87, in Egypt in 1889, in Palestine in 1891/92, again in Germany and in St. Petersburg in 1894, in Moscow in 1896, in Spain in 1902, and in 1913/14 in Greece, the Balkans and Egypt, 1918 in the USA, 1921 in Iceland and Greenland and 1924/25 in California.
- Princely houses
Due to his great talent, he received many orders for representational pictures of the royal and princely courts of Europe at an early age. Between 1883 and 1886 he made the 5 × 7 meter painting for the Danish royal house of King Christian IX. with his family at Fredensborg Palace .
In 1887 he was called to England to paint a picture of Queen Victoria and her family at Windsor Castle . Having advanced to become court painter to the English royal family, further pictures followed over the years, such as the wedding of the Duke of York, a garden party for Victoria's anniversary at Buckingham Palace , and a picture of the funeral service in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle the death of the queen and several pictures of the coronation of King Edward .
He performed similar commissions for the Russian imperial family, where he painted The Wedding of Nicholas II and Alexandra Fyodorovna in 1895 and The Coronation of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna in 1898 .
- Skagen painter
The Skagen painters ( Danish Skagensmalerne ) formed Denmark's best-known artist colony in the fishing village of Skagen , which flourished in the 1880s. Most of the artists from Scandinavia wanted to turn away from the academic conception of art. They valued outdoor painting and took their bearings from French realism and naturalism . After a first visit in 1870, Tuxen returned to Skagen in 1901 and settled there. He bought a property in the Vesterby district, which he had the well-known architect Thorvald Jørgensen (1867-1946) convert into a stately summer house called "Dagminne". In the following years Tuxen painted numerous pictures of Skagen and on subjects such as family, friends, landscape, sea, beach and garden flowers. In addition, alongside PS Krøyer and Michael Ancher, he was very involved in founding the Skagens Museum .
- Functions / honors
Laurits Tuxen received the title of professor at the art academy in 1892. He was a jury member for several world exhibitions, including Paris 1889 and Paris 1900 . He was a member of the academic plenary assembly in 1894 and of the academy council from 1897 to 1926. He was professor at the academy from 1906 to 1916, and from 1920 to 1923 he was its vice director. In 1893 he received the Eckersberg Medal (officially Akademiets Aarsmedaille or Annual Medal of the Academy), named after the painter Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg , and a medal from the Chicago World's Fair . Tuxen was honored with the Dannebrogden (Ridder af Dannebrog) and received the award as Dannebrog man (Dannebrogsmand).
- family
Laurits Tuxen was the seventh and youngest child and the second son in the family of Nicolai and Bertha Tuxen. He was married from 1886 to the Belgian Charlotte Pauline Ursule de Baisieux (1862–1899) and after her early death in second marriage from 1901 to the Norwegian Frederikke Treschow (1856–1946). The first marriage had four daughters; Paula (1887–1899), Elsa (1892–1896), Yvonne (1894–1987) and Nina (1898–1982). The flower painter Bertha Nicoline Tuxen (1847–1931) was Laurits Tuxen's sister.
Laurits Tuxen died shortly before the age of 74 and was buried in Copenhagen's Vestre Kirkegård.
