The Orlogsværftet (War Shipyard) was one of the oldest shipyards in Denmark .

history

The shipyard was founded by King John I in the 1500s near the Holmen naval station on the island of Slotsholmen near what is now Copenhagen's city center . Until well into the 19th century, it was the nation's leading shipyard producing torpedo boats , armored ships and submarines for the Danish Navy . The first director of the shipyard known by name was Ole Judichær , a ship designer and admiral who ran the shipyard from 1692 to 1727.

Part of the shipyard was separated in 1924 and continued as a private company under the direction of the Ministry of the Navy. Orlogsværftet built the Danish royal family's state yacht Dannebrog in 1931 .

In 1970 Orlogsværftet launched its last new building, the Nordkaperen submarine (S321), which belongs to the 205 submarine class . After that, Orlogsværftet served as a repair yard until it was closed in 1992.

Industrial monument

The area around the former shipyard was designated by the Kulturarvsstyrelsen (cultural authority) as Nationale Industriminder (national industrial heritage ). A number of the former shipyard buildings are also protected as monuments.
