Slotsholmen is an island in the inner city of the Danish capital Copenhagen , which has been the country's center of power since the Middle Ages. It is still home to numerous government institutions today, including the Parliament ( Folketing ), the Supreme Court ( Højesteret ) and royal representative rooms in Christiansborg , the offices of the Prime Minister and other ministers , the Ministry of Finance and the State Chancellery . There are also the Royal Library , the Imperial Archives , the former stock exchange and several museums on the island. Slotsholmen was the location of the Orlogsværftet naval shipyard as early as the 1500s .
With an area of 21 hectares , the island has 18 inhabitants (January 1, 2020). It belongs to the parish (Danish Sogn ) Holmens Sogn , which belonged to Harde Sokkelund Herred in what was then Københavns Amt until the Danish municipal reform of 1970 , then to the non-official Københavns Municipality , which became part of the Hovedstaden region with the next Danish municipal reform in 2007 .
The island is connected to Zealand by eight bridges and one to Christianshavn . In the west over the Frederikholm Canal, from north to south, Stormbroen , Marmorbroen , Prinsens bro and Bryghusbroen . The Knippelsbro leads to Christianshavn via the Inderhavn in the south of the island . In the north and east, the island is separated from Zealand by the Slotsholmen Canal . From south to north, Christian IV's Bro , Børsbroen , Holmens Bro and finally Højbro lead across it .
