Knippelsbro [ ˈknebəlsbʀoːʔ ] is a four-lane road bridge in Copenhagen , which leads over the Inderhavnen (inner harbor) and connects the Christianshavn district with the city center of Copenhagen ( Indre By ). It is a 115-meter-long and around 27-meter-wide bascule bridge that can be opened for shipping from the bridge tower if necessary, but this rarely happens because the port activities have shifted to other areas.

The bridge is the motif on the new 200 kroner banknotes that have been in circulation since October 2010. The banknote, drawn by the artist Karin Birgitte Lund, is part of a series published from 2009 to 2011 that, among other things, has Danish bridges as a theme.

history

The first bridge at this point was built between 1618 and 1620 under Christian IV . It is named after the bridge keeper Hans Knip, who took up his duties in 1648, and was called Knippensbro until the 19th century . Successor buildings were an 86-meter-long iron bridge from 1869 and the Møllers bro from 1908. Because the latter could not keep up with the increasing volume of traffic at the beginning of the 1920s, it was decided to build a new bridge - the current one December 1937 was inaugurated.

In Bille August 's film Fräulein Smillas Gespür für Schnee (1997) , the bridge is the starting point for the plot in an opening scene . She also has a brief appearance in the 1974 film The (Probably) Last Prank of the Olsen Gang .

On December 12th, 2009 the bridge was the platform for a protest against the Copenhagen climate summit .
