The royal yacht Dannebrog ( Danish: Kongeskibet [ ˈkɔŋəsgiːʔbəð ] "royal ship") is the ship of the Danish royal family . The luxury yacht built in 1932 ( international call sign : OUDA) is named after the flag of Denmark , the Dannebrog , like its predecessor of the same name (1879–1932) . Together with the Norwegian Norge, she is one of the two remaining royal yachts in Europe.

The royal yacht Dannebrog was christened by Queen Alexandrine in Copenhagen in 1931 and had her maiden voyage on May 26, 1932 . Today the ship serves as the official and private residence of Queen Margrethe , Prince Consort Henrik (until his death) and other members of the royal family during official overseas visits or on summer voyages in local waters. At the same time, the Dannebrog is a naval ship that takes part in maritime surveillance and the rescue service. The military ship identification ( A540 ) is not attached to the hull, but is indicated by signal flags on the foremast . As part of a modernization, the two diesel engines from Burmeister & Wain were installed in 1980 and a bow thruster from Jastram was added in 1988 .

The Dannebrog was designed by NK Nielsen and built in 1931–32 at the Orlogsværftet naval shipyard in Copenhagen. It replaced the paddle steamer Dannebrog from 1879. The hull is made of riveted steel. The ship is divided into two sections: the crew is accommodated in front of the chimney, and the royal lounge area is aft. When the ship served as a hospital ship in World War II , the patients were housed in the royal ward. The stern above deck is used for receptions.

The royal rooms contain the study of the queen and the prince consort , the dining room, the communal salon, bedrooms, etc. The furnishings were selected by the queen and prince consort. Parts of the previous royal ship from 1879 have also been built. The two salute cannons (caliber 37 mm) mounted when the plant was commissioned were removed in 1948.

The royal yacht forms an independent command in the Danish Navy , which is led by the yacht captain of Her Majesty. He is also a member of her court staff. The full crew of the Dannebrog consists of nine officers, seven boatmen, two regular soldiers and 35 conscripts, all of whom are handpicked by the Navy. The officers and NCOs serve on the ship for two to four years, while the conscripts sign up for a summer. If the queen and a maximum of 14 passengers travel by ship, the crew is increased by 27 people from the royal household.

Since commissioning in 1932, the ship has covered over 400,000 nautical miles and visited almost all ports in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands . The ship was also visiting many European ports, particularly France, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean . 1980-81 the king yacht underwent an overhaul and renovation in order to adapt it to today's conditions, in particular the main engine was renewed.
