Vágur [ ˈvɔavʊɹ ] ( Danish name : Våg , literally: bay ) is a place in the Faroe Islands on the island of Suðuroy .
The place
Vágur is next to Tvøroyri the second largest city in Southuroy and at the same time the administrative seat of the Faroese municipality of Vágur ( Vágs kommuna ). The city is located on the east coast of the island by the Vágsfjørður fjord , which forms a convenient natural harbor. In the meantime, Vágur has merged with the place Nes , so that Nes is regarded as a suburb, or district, Vágurs. Further east on the same fjord is Porkeri . Together the three places form a local conurbation . In 2013 the place had 1,330 inhabitants. The zip code is FO-900. The local football club is FC Suðuroy ( Vágs Bóltfelag ).
The settlement dates back to the 14th century. In addition to the fishing fleet and the associated industry, the Sirri wool spinning mill is located in Vágur.
A specialty of the city is the Viðarlundin á Vági forest , which was reforested from 1956. It covers an area of 3.01 hectares, making it one of the largest forests in the Faroe Islands. Several paved paths lead through it.
Also worth seeing is the church, consecrated in 1939, in front of which there is a bronze statue of the theologian Jákup Dahl (1878–1944). It is 2.14 m high and was designed in 1978 by Janus Kamban, one of the leading artists in the Faroe Islands.
Every two years (with even years, otherwise in Tvøroyri ) the Jóansøka festival takes place here around June 24th . It is a sports, culture and music festival and the highlight of the year on Suðuroy.
