Jóansøka is traditionally also the day on which new high school graduates celebrate on Suðuroy. This picture shows three graduates in Vágur in Faroese costume with “student hats”.

The Jóansøka [ jɔuans.øːka ] is a folk festival on the Faroes . Jóansøka is the Faroese name for St. John's Day on June 24th (birthday of John the Baptist ) and is also there in close connection with the summer solstice .

Jóansøka was established as a folk festival in the Faroe Islands in 1925 , when the residents of Tvøroyri and Vágur agreed to hold a summer festival on the island of Suðuroy alternately every year . Since then, the festival has taken place in Tvøroyri in odd years (most recently in 2007) and in even years in Vágur (most recently in 2006). A weekend is always taken around June 24th and the summer solstice.

Originally Jóansøka was purely a sports and cultural festival, and a regatta for the championship in Faroese rowing is still held there today . In addition to the rowing competition, there is football , cycling and running. On the cultural side, various exhibitions of crafts, arts and historical artifacts are arranged. This is complemented by a culture café. As with the other Faroese folk festivals, there is always Faroese chain dance in the evenings .

Since 2005 there has also been a music festival with local and foreign artists, the Jóansøkufestival . 2007 e.g. B. with John Lawton (UK), Eyðun Nolsøe , Terji Rasmussen , Brandur Enni and Teitur Lassen . Andrew Strong (IRL) performed here in 2006 , and The Sweet (UK) in 2005 . The festival is organized by the former Týr singer Pól Arni Holm .
