John Lawton (2003)

John Cooper Lawton (born July 11, 1946 in Halifax , † June 29, 2021 ) was a British rock singer. He became known from the 1970s for his work with Uriah Heep , The Les Humphries Singers and Lucifer's Friend .

Life

Lawton was in 1946 in the English born Halifax. His musical career began in North Shields , where he performed with the band The Deans in the early 1960s. He moved first to West One and then to Stonewall, where John Miles , Vic Malcolm (later Geordie ) and Paul Thompson (later Roxy Music ) were members. After the band ended their engagement in the Top Ten Club in Hamburg in 1969 , Lawton decided to stay in Germany after receiving an offer from Lucifer's Friend to join the band as a singer. Here he sang from 1969 to 1976, 1981/82 and from 2014.

From the 1970s he was a member of the Les Humphries Singers . Here he was the solo singer of many titles, such as the hit Mama Loo from 1973. In 1975 he took part in the recordings of Roger Glover's The Butterfly Ball . He sang the title Little Chalk Blue and performed alongside several musicians from Deep Purple at the project's only concert in London's Royal Albert Hall .

From 1976 to 1979 he was the front man of Uriah Heep and sang the chart hits Free Me (1977) and Come Back to Me (1978). In 2001 he released the album The Return with Ken Hensley , with which they appeared together as the Hensley Lawton Band. Most of the songs in it are from the times they shared with Uriah Heep. In December 2001 Lawton and Hensley first appeared on stage with the then formation of Uriah Heep during the annual Magician's Birthday Party in London . In 2007 Hensley released his biography Blood on the Highway - Part I on CD. Here Lawton worked as a guest singer.

John Lawton died in June 2021 at the age of 74.
