past
Hvannasund is first mentioned in writing in the Jarðarbókin of 1584. In 1866 a merchant from Hvannasund founded the neighboring village of Norðdepil on the opposite bank of the sound on Borðoy . In 1893 the houses in the village were badly devastated by a landslide. Two years later, Hvannasund received a school for the first time. In 1932 a new school building was opened and in 1949 the church of Hvannasund was consecrated. In 1963 a connecting dam was built across the sound between Norðdepil on Borðoy and Hvannasund on Viðoy.
On May 28, 2008, there was a tsunami in Hvannasund with a 3 m high tidal wave. Nobody was injured. The cause is unknown.
present
The main line of business in Hvannasund is fishing, which is represented locally with fish farming, fishing and fish processing.
Besides Viðareiði, Hvannasund itself is the only place on Viðoy. It has been connected to Norðdepil by a road embankment since 1963 and further to Klaksvík by two tunnels since 1967 . Thanks to Viðareiðistunnilin , which opened in September 2016, the village Viðareiði in the north of Viðoy can now be reached safely from Hvannasund.
The ferry traffic with the passenger ferry Ritan across Fugloyarfjørður to the islands of Fugloy and Svínoy also makes Hvannasund very important for the eastern part of the six north islands .
