Viðareiðistunnilin (Eng .: the Viðareiðitunnel ) is an almost 2 km long road tunnel on Viðoy , the northernmost island of the Faroe Islands . It connects the two island towns Viðareiði and Hvannasund .

Tunnel construction and opening

Construction of the tunnel began in June 2014. Due to good progress in construction, the tunnel was completed early in summer 2016 and opened in early September 2016.

The two-lane tunnel is 1939 meters long and connects the two island towns Viðareiði and Hvannasund. Since the tunnel access is on the Viðareiði side at some distance from the town center in the Middalur corridor , a new connecting road had to be built on the east coast of Viðoy. The tunnel access on the Hvannasund side, however, connects to the existing coastal road.

Due to the tunnel is, among other things, the desire for an alternative option for a rockfall endangered section of the running along the west coast coastal road Viðareiði after Hvannasund.
