Norðtoftir [ ˈnoːʂˌtɔftɪɹ ] ( Danish : Nordtofte ) is a place in the Faroe Islands on the island of Borðoy , which is one of the six northern islands . Administratively, the place is affiliated to the Faroese municipality Hvannasund ( Hvannasunds kommuna ). On January 1, 2016, there were three residents in Norðtoftir. The zip code is FO-736.

Local knowledge

The small town of Norðtoftir is located on the east coast of Borðoy, right at the end of the second tunnel of the Klaksvík road . The next larger towns in the area are Norðdepil and Hvannasund on the further course of the road. Historically, Norðtoftir appears for the first time together with the neighboring village of Depil in Jarðarbókin from 1584. In 1835 there were school lessons in the village for the first time. Norðtoftir was a popular place to stay for the writer Herman Bang , who wrote many of his works here. The most important facility in the village today is a salmon rearing station owned by the Eystlaks company . The population of Norðtoftir has decreased significantly over the past ten years. In 2005 there were still 8 people living in the village, a decade later the village had only three inhabitants.
