Borðoy [ ˈboːɹɔi ] ( Danish spelling : Bordø ) is an island in the Faroe Islands . There Borðoy is the largest of the so-called North Islands .
The islands are administratively divided into the municipalities of Klaksvíkar kommuna and Hvannasunds kommuna . The main town of Klaksvík has 4,601 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2014). Borðoy was connected to the port of Leirvík on the western neighboring island of Eysturoy by a car ferry until 2006 . Since then, a submarine toll tunnel has connected the two islands. The neighboring island of Viðoy to the east is connected to a road embankment that was opened in 1963. There are two single-lane tunnels that opened in 1965 and 1967, respectively. The northwestern island of Kunoy has been accessible via another road embankment since 1988.
