Streymoy [ stɹɛimɔi ] / [ stɹɛimɪ ] ( Danish : Stromo , German Meaning: flow island or power island ) is the main island of the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic . In the south on the east coast is the capital Tórshavn .

geography

The name Streymoy comes from the fact that the long Sundini strait between Streymoy and the large neighboring island of Eysturoy has a strong current (up to 12 knots), which also changes direction regularly with the tides.

The Streymoy region includes the small islands of Nólsoy , Hestur and Koltur , which will be incorporated into the municipality of Tórshavn from January 1, 2005 . In general, this municipality is also seen as a separate region, Südstreymoy , while the rest of the island forms the Nordstreymoy region .

The second largest town next to Tórshavn is Vestmanna on the west coast of the island. Significant sights outside the state capital are in Kirkjubøur (former bishopric ), Saksun (sandy beach, historic farm) and Tjørnuvík (sandy beach, view of Risin and Kellingin ).

Other places are Velbastaður with a view of Koltur, Syðradalur , Norðradalur , Skælingur , Leynar (bathing beach) and Kvívík (Viking houses) on the west coast.

South of Tjornuvik follow Sundalag Haldarsvík (octagonal church), Langasandur , Streymnes , Hvalvík (old Faroese wooden church near the forest Viðarlundin í Hvalvík ) við Air (old whaling station), Hósvík , Kollafjørður , Mjørkadalur ( Danish military base ), Kaldbak , Kaldbaksbotnur and Hvítanes .

In the south the island is separated from Sandoy and the south of the country by the Skopunarfjørður . The Hestsfjørður separates Streymoy from Hestur and Koltur. North of it begins Vágafjørður , and then Vestmannasund , which separates Streymoy from Vágar . The northern section of the west coast faces the open North Atlantic and is shaped by the mighty cliffs of Vestmannabjørgini .

On the north coast is the striking Stakkur cliff , to which there is a small cable car to release sheep.

The flatter sloping east coast is almost completely developed. The Sundalag area is the Sundini region with settlements on both sides of the strait. The wider strait to the south is called Tangafjørður . Two fjords intersect in the southern part of the east coast: the Kollafjørður and the Kaldbaksfjørður .

The Nólsoy finally separates Tórshavn of the barrier island Nólsoy to which you constantly have a look if you are in the capital.

The largest natural lake on Streymoy with 18 hectares of water surface is Leynavatn near Leynar .

In addition to the highest elevation, the 789 m high Kopsenni , the northernmost peak of Streymoy, the 564 m high Cape Mýlingur , and the 749 m high Sornfelli with the plateau of the same name near Kollafjørður are worth mentioning. The NATO radar station in the summit area from the days of the Cold War has been shut down for several years. A weather station has been in operation on the plateau at an altitude of 725 m since 1999.

Transport links

All Streymoys towns are connected to the road network, the last time Syðradalur got the long-awaited connection on the west coast in 1982. The car bridge over the Sundini to Eysturoy, which is often (jokingly) called the only car bridge over the Atlantic, has existed since 1973 . Since around 2005 there have been concrete plans to build an undersea tunnel from Tórshavn to Eysturoy.

The Vágar tunnel to Vágar Airport on the neighboring island of the same name in the west has existed since 2002 . Since 2004 the state government has been considering digging another submarine tunnel to the neighboring island of Sandoy in the south . As things stand today (2007), the Sandoy tunnel would be the longest submarine road tunnel in the world. Until then, traffic to Sandoy will be handled from Gamlarætt , a newly created port that also serves Hestur and significantly shortens the old passage from Tórshavn.

From Tórshavn Havn , only the passenger ferry to the offshore island of Nólsoy and the large car ferry Smyril to the south island of Suðuroy operate in Faroese regional traffic . Streymoy enjoys international sea connections through the Norröna , which sails once a week from Tórshavn to Denmark ( Hirtshals ) and Iceland ( Seyðisfjörður ).

Regular buses connect Tórshavn with Vágar Airport and the other places on Streymoy.

Atlantic Airways offers a helicopter service from Tórshavn to the most remote parts of the archipelago.
