Mjørkadalur

Mjørkadalur [ ˈmjœɻkaˌdɛalʊɹ ] is not actually a place in the Faroe Islands , but was a base of the Danish Navy ( Færøernes Kommando ) on the main island of Streymoy , which served as the command center for the radar system further up on the Sornfelli .

The radar station on the Sornfelli serves not only as an early warning system for NATO , but also for air traffic control in civil aviation .

The station started operations on August 16, 1963 . The associated radar station, which was part of the chain of NATO early warning stations around the Arctic Circle , is located on the Sornfelli at an altitude of 749 meters . On New Year's Day 2007, the radar early warning system closed. A radar is still in operation for civil purposes to monitor the airspace for aviation. The building has served as a detention center for petty criminals since 2011, there are 12 rooms there. Serious criminals, on the other hand, are transferred to Denmark for detention , as there is no prison in the Faroe Islands .

Road 10 from Tórshavn to Mjørkadalur was expanded into one of the most important main roads in the Faroe Islands after NATO transferred this supply route to the Faroese government in 1966 . Later this road continued to the north of the island and also connects the capital with Vestmanna in the west and the bridge to Eysturoy in the east. Today, however, long-distance traffic in this regard is routed through the (safer) coastal road on the east coast of Streymoy and the tunnel behind Kaldbaksbotnur .
