past and present

Kollafjørður is first mentioned in writing in Jarðarbókin from 1584, where the place appears under the Danish name Koldefiord . At least since the Middle Ages there has been a local thing site, the so-called Várting . One of the ten Faroese wooden churches is located in the village . It dates from 1837.

The well-known Faroese farmer and poet Jens Christian Djurhuus (1773-1853) lived in the district við Sjógv (by the sea) and is therefore also called Sjóvarbóndin (the sea builder).

Although the place historically belongs to Nordstreymoy, the municipality ( Kollafjarðar kommuna ) , which was independent until 2001, with the places Kollafjørður, Signabøur and Oyrareingir was incorporated into the capital municipality of Tórshavn ( municipality : Tórshavnar kommuna ).

Kollafjørður has seen a significant population decline over the past 25 years. While 930 people lived in the village in 1989, the number was only 734 in 2014. However, the number of inhabitants has increased slightly again in the last two years. The main line of business is the fishing industry. There is a fishing port and fish processing facilities on site. Furthermore, the Faroe Islands' agricultural research station ( Royndarstøðin ) is located in Kollafjørður , as well as a factory that produces window panes and mirror glass.

The place also has its own sports club, which is abbreviated to KÍF. The club operates a handball, volleyball and rowing department. The historical connection to the Sundalag in the northern part of the island is still reflected today in the so-called Sundalagsstevna , a rowing competition that takes place annually alternately in summer in Hósvík , Hvalvík or Kollafjørður.

The bank robbery of Kollafjørður

In January 1985 the first known bank robbery on the Faroe Islands took place in Kollafjørður . Two perpetrators asked for all of the money from the local bank and escaped. The police first had to move from neighboring Tórshavn and, due to inexperience, decided not to block the road, so that the perpetrators probably approached them by car without being recognized.

Despite the anonymous structures on the island, the police felt in the dark for a long time and requested reinforcements from Copenhagen . They only knew the height of the suspects. A nonconformist in question was first arrested , but he had to show an alibi in the form of a swimming pool ticket.

One of the two perpetrators was eventually arrested while giving out the loot. When he bought a video recorder that cost 3,000 kroner , he only paid with 10 kroner bills, as he had received all the small bills when he shared the booty.

Warm water springs in Kollafjørður

Kollafjørður hit the headlines in the summer of 2014 when two boreholes in the á Lygnnesi district of 165 m and 200 m respectively came up with water up to 26.2 ° C. The most productive of the two boreholes emitted 33 tons of water per hour. Local geologists were surprised and searched for an explanation for this natural phenomenon in the time that followed.
