The municipality of Tórshavn ( Faroese Tórshavnar kommuna ) is the largest Faroese municipality , both in terms of area and population. The municipality was founded in 1866 . This officially made the city of Tórshavn the capital of the country.
In addition to the capital Tórshavn and the merged places Argir in the south and Hoyvík in the north, it includes Norðradalur and Syðradalur in the west; Hvítanes , Sund , Kaldbaksbotnur , Kaldbak and Kollafjørður north on Streymoy's east coast ; and the Danish military base Mjørkadalur in the mountains.
Since January 1, 2005 , the municipality of Tórshavn has been merged with the following municipalities: Hestur (with Koltur ), Kirkjubøur (with Velbastaður ) and Nólsoy . Mayor has been the social democratic politician Heðin Mortensen since that date .
The municipality of Tórshavn is the only municipality in the Faroe Islands whose territory extends over four islands. In November 2015, the population of the municipality reached a new high of 20,468 people: never before have more people lived in the Faroese capital. The capital's share of the total population is now over 40 percent.
