Tinganes
Tinganes (German translation: " Thing -Landzunge") is a peninsula in the port of Tórshavn .
Tinganes takes its name from the Løgting , which goes back to the Viking Age in the Faroe Islands . Already around 900 the free men of the Faroe Islands gathered here for the thing. Løgting itself is now a little further north in the city center of Tórshavn , but the Faroese state government is still based here.
Tinganes is the oldest part of the city and is characterized by its narrow streets. The Tórshavner Cathedral is also located here .
In 999 the Viking chief Tróndur í Gøtu was baptized here and the Christianization of the Faroe Islands was decided.
One of the "Seven Faroese Wonders"
For Ólavsøka 2007, Faroese television Sjónvarp Føroya organized a nationwide competition on the “Seven Faroese Wonders”, in which viewers could make any suggestions about special buildings and other objects. A ranking of the eight winners (due to a tie in one case) has not been announced, but Tinganes is one of them. The others are the stalls of Kirkjubøur , the Magnus Cathedral , the Christianskirkjan in Klaksvík , the House of the North , the Norðoyatunnilin , the first Faroe flag in the Church of Fámjin and the seat of the Imperial Ombudsman in the Faroe Islands (the last two with a tie).
