A wad is basically a loose structure of fibers or threads that only result in a volume structure due to the adhesion to one another. Wadding made of fibers is called fiber wadding and wadding made of threads is called thread wadding.

The most common wadding consists mainly of cellulose from cotton fibers , viscose or synthetic fibers such as polyester. It serves z. B. cosmetics , the protection of the ear canal or wound care ( cotton wool ). Furthermore, wadding is used in women's and men's outerwear, e.g. B. for wadding jackets .

For cosmetics, for example, the cotton wool is processed into cotton pads , cotton balls or cotton swabs and used, for example, to remove make-up , i.e. to cleanse the face.

As a medical device , DNA- free cotton swabs are used to take samples, e.g. B. used for saliva samples for forensic identity determination (regulated in the DNA Identity Determination Act ). In veterinary diagnostics, the cotton ball test is used to check vision.

Also tampons and sanitary napkins are largely made of cotton wool.

Furthermore, cotton wool is used as a carrier for liquids (liquid active or fragrance substances) in self-winding evaporators (see e-cigarettes ).
