Stóra Dímun [ ˈstɔuɹa ˈdʊimʊn ] ( Danish : Store Dimon , German : Groß-Dimun ) is the third smallest of the 18 islands in the Faroe Islands . It belongs to the region of the island of Sandoy and there to the municipality of the island of Skúvoy . At the same time it has the status of a Útoyggj (outer island).

history

The name Dímun probably comes from the Celtic and means two hills in allusion to the two neighboring islands of Groß-Dimun and Klein-Dimun . Up to 25 people once lived in Dímun. The church there was taken out of service in 1922.

The history of settlement in Dímun goes back to the time of the Viking conquest in the 10th century. Dímun is already mentioned in the Faroese saga: it happened once, when the brothers Brestir and Beinir were on their farm in Dimun, that they drove to the island of Klein-Dimun, which is uninhabited; there they grazed their sheep and the cattle they tried to slaughter. According to tradition, Sigmundur Brestisson was a nine-year-old boy who witnessed the murder of his father Brestir and his brother Beinir. It was Sigmundur who Christianized the Faroe Islands in 999 and tried to abolish the principle of blood revenge. In 1808 the last giant aalk on the Faroe Islands was observed here. Giant alks occasionally came to the Faroe Islands as invasion birds in the summer . Its arrival was seen by bird trappers as a good omen for a successful hunting season.

Today there is a farm on Stóra Dímun, which is the only settlement. About 400 sheep graze on the island and many puffins and kittiwakes nest . On January 1, 2018, the island had ten inhabitants.

education

Since 2012 school-age children have been taught by a teacher from Tórshavn , who lives on the island except during the holidays.
