occupation

Fahrenheit 9/11 is a documentary in the form of a report by the American producer Michael Moore . Among other things, he sheds light on the business relationships of President Bush's family with Arab business people, especially those belonging to the bin Laden family. The film describes the policy of the US government after the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York , known under the US short name for the date of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, " nine-eleven ". The film's stated purpose was to campaign against the re-election of incumbent George W. Bush in the US presidential election on November 2, 2004 ; however, Bush became president again.

action

The documentary, the content of which is narrated and critically commented on by Michael Moore, begins with a description of the election fraud in the context of the 2000 presidential election in Florida , which brought Bush to office. Then his activities during the Vietnam War and the later attempt to cover up his friendship with James R. Bath are listed. After Bush's unsuccessful attempts as an entrepreneur as well as his frequent vacations and political disinterest as president, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and again Bush's disinterest in the dramatic events: he did not stop attending school that day, but continued reading to the children, “My little kid ”, although he had already been notified of both impacts. The departure of the Bin Laden clan despite the strict flight ban and the connections between Bush and Bin Laden due to extremely high investments by the Saudis in the USA (860 billion US dollars, of which 1.4 billion US dollars were payments to the Bush clan and Friends) are discussed. Then Moore talks about the earlier armament of Saddam Hussein by the Americans in the 1980s. In general, the drastic rearmament has led to huge profits for US defense companies such as the Carlyle Group and Halliburton .

Moore then criticized the fact that some time after September 11, 2001, bin Laden was apparently no longer of interest to politicians, which is said to have hampered the investigation. The interest of Americans in an oil pipeline in Afghanistan and Hamid Karzai's work as an oil consultant are also discussed. Then the US's many bogus pretexts for the Iraq war, i.e. the Iraq-Al-Qaeda link, the stock of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and the terrorist threat scenario are discussed everywhere . The USA PATRIOT Act , which is a complete surveillance of the US population, is also criticized.

Then Moore deals with the reality of the attack on Iraq . Above all, this includes innocent victims (civilians killed), torture and young soldiers who go to war with music and make dignified jokes with corpses. In contrast to this, the recruiting of soldiers in US slums is shown with the slogan “The army is an option” and an interview with a patriotic soldier's mother who will later lose her son is shown. Other subjects covered include the abuse of anti-war demonstrators, the exploitation of the poor by those responsible for the war and their greed for profit, and the significantly tiny minority of MPs sons who serve in Iraq. In general, the aspects presented are intended to convey the senselessness of war. At the end of the film, Moore draws a comparison between the Iraq war on terror and the Eternal War in George Orwell's 1984 , the aim of which is to maintain power by creating a constant threat and impoverishment of the population.

title

The title of the film is based on the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and the film of the same name by François Truffaut . The title Fahrenheit 451 refers to the temperature at which paper begins to burn, and Fahrenheit 9/11, according to Moore, is " the temperature where freedom burns ".

The use of the name Fahrenheit 9/11 as a reference to Fahrenheit 451 happened according to statements of its author Bradbury without prior request. Bradbury said in an interview: “Michael Moore is a stupid bastard. That's how I feel about him. He stole my title and changed the numbers without ever asking my permission. "

criticism

The film FahrenHYPE 9/11 from 2004 was shot as a reaction to Fahrenheit 9/11 and claims to prove that Michael Moore had inaccurate research and manipulation on many points. Film critic Christopher Null accused the filmmakers of criticizing Moore with a lot of arguments, but not being able to substantiate any of these arguments. Most of the arguments would work against the filmmakers themselves, whose main aim is to justify George Bush's policies. In doing so, they would lack the talent of Michael Moore. In the introduction to his review of FahrenHYPE, film critic Roger Ebert quotes Moore critic David Hardy, who worked on this film: “Michael Moore is un-American and un-British. It has to be French. ”Ebert criticizes Moore, but says that he is far from backing the spirit of the makers of FahrenHYPE. He accuses the makers of not being able to make a single argument against Moore. Instead, a kind of defamation campaign is being criticized for its “leftist sentiments”. Above all, he accuses the maker of the film, Morris, of emulating absurd conspiracy theories according to which Germany, France and Russia were bribed by Iraq.

success

The film was at its premiere on 17 May 2004 at the Film Festival in Cannes greeted with enthusiasm and with the Palme d'Or award. The Association of International Film Critics also named it the best film in the festival's main competition.

Financial

Fahrenheit 9/11 is still the most commercially successful documentary with revenue of nearly 222.5 million US dollars in costs incurred of 6 million US dollars.

Planned continuation

Michael Moore planned the sequel to this film, which should have been completed in 2007, under the title Fahrenheit 9/11½ . The focus should be on the US war against Iraq . Harvey Weinstein was to work very closely with Moore on this film. Regarding the necessity of the film, Moore said in the 2004 US presidential election : “51 percent of Americans lacked the information and we want to educate and enlighten them. You weren't told the truth. We are intermediaries and it is up to us to start now ”.

Others

It was only after tough negotiations that distribution of the film in the USA and Canada was secured after Disney, as the parent company, originally prohibited the production company Miramax from distributing the film. The reason was that he was too political. The Miramax bosses Bob and Harvey Weinstein then bought the rights to the film as private individuals and organized an alternative distribution.

Michael Moore had made the film with the declared intention of preventing Bush from being re-elected. To achieve this, he gave up the opportunity to win another Oscar after Bowling for Columbine . According to the regulations, nominated films may not be shown on television before being nominated. However, Moore planned to show his film on TV before the US presidential election.

In September 2018 Moore's film Fahrenheit 11/9 was released , which addresses the election of Donald Trump as US President.
