Jeff Gibbs (born August 4, 1980 in Columbus , Ohio ) is an American basketball player who played in Germany from 2004 to 2010 and after being promoted to the Bundesliga with ratiopharm Ulm in 2006, he has been the BBL's best rebounder in the last four seasons was. After an engagement with Eisbären Bremerhaven, Gibbs is now playing for Toyota Alvark in Japan under the former BBL coach Don Beck .

college

The officially 1.88 m tall and 110 kg heavy Power Forward was a player in the university teams in American football and basketball during his studies at Otterbein College in his native US state . The small college is a member of the NCAA Division III, which in relation to the teams from Division I usually does not produce professional athletes. Gibbs, who claims to be 6 feet 1 inch and thus just under 1.86 m tall, was a dominant player in this league and collected almost 2,000 points and almost 1,500 rebounds in his four-year season, making him the best rebounder in the history of the Otterbein Cardinals . In his senior year in 2002, he won the Cardinals' only Division III basketball championship to date and was elected to the nationwide selection of the best athletes ( All-American ) in this little-known league of university teams in both American football and basketball . He was also voted best player ( player of the year ) in Division III in 2002 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches . Because of his body size for basketball players in his position, Gibbs initially planned a career in American football, but later continued his career in basketball.

Career in Germany

In January 2004 Gibbs came to Germany and played for TSG Humana from Ehingen in the 2nd basketball division . For the 2005/06 season he moved to the regional competitor and former first division club from Ulm and was with ratiopharm Ulm champion of the 2nd basketball league group south and thus promoted to the top division. In the BBL, despite his comparatively small size, he was the best rebounder in the following four seasons . As a rule, this can only be achieved by players who are over 2 meters tall, which is why Gibbs is also known by the nickname Mr. incredible ( German  "Herr Unglaublich" ). In the Ulm jersey, he led the league statistics in three seasons in the double doubles category : 06/07 together with Raško Katić in 15 double doubles in 34 games, 07/08 in 13 in 34 games and 08/09 in 16 in 34 players. In the seasons 06/07 and 08/09 he was second in the choice of Most Valuable Player , 06/07 behind the Ludwigsburg Jerry Green and 08/09 behind the Oldenburg Jason Gardner . With Ulm he was able to reach the play-offs for the German championship in the basketball Bundesliga in 2008/09 for the first time after the Ulm re -promotion by a good fifth place in the main round , where one against the eventual runner-up Telekom Baskets Bonn in the first round retired. For the 2009/2010 season Gibbs signed a one-year contract with the Eisbären Bremerhaven . With the Eisbären, last in the previous season and only qualified for another first division season with a wild card , he reached the play-offs again and was only eliminated in the semifinals in the extension of the playoff of the series against the eventual runner-up Skyliners Frankfurt .
