Jason Corey Gardner (born November 14, 1980 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) is an American basketball coach and former player. With the EWE Baskets Oldenburg, Gardner was awarded German champion in 2009 and as MVP of the highest German division basketball Bundesliga .

Career

The only 1.78 m tall and 85 kg heavy Guard played during his studies in his home country from 1999 to 2003 for the renowned Wildcats of the University of Arizona in the NCAA . With the team he reached the final game of the national NCAA finals in 2001 , which, however, against the Blue Devils of Duke University to Shane Battier and Mike Dunleavy Jr. got lost. Although Gardner was recognized as an All-American in his senior playing year in the NCAA and received the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award for the best player not taller than 183 cm, he remained in the entry draft of the NBA's highest endowed professional league disregarded. Then Gardner started his professional career in Europe and played for the Slovenian champion KK Krka from Novo mesto , which, however, was disappointing in that 2003/04 season. After a season in Belgium for Telindus from Ostend Gardner was active in the 2005/06 season in the Israeli Ligat ha'Al for Maccabi Ironi from Ramat Gan .

For the 2006/2007 season Gardner moved to Telekom Baskets from Bonn in the German basketball league. He and his team lost just under five games in the first play-off round against the eventual champions Brose Baskets Bamberg. The following season he switched to league rivals EWE Baskets from Oldenburg , with whom he was able to defeat defending champion Brose Baskets in the first round of the play-offs. In the semi-final series they then failed at the eventual champions ALBA Berlin . In the second year in Oldenburg it was enough for the club to win its first championship title in 2009, after defeating its former team Telekom Baskets Bonn very tightly in the final seconds of the final series game. Gardner had previously been voted MVP for the 2008/09 BBL season . In the following year Gardner fell out due to injuries, especially at the beginning of the season, and was finally unable to match his previous level of performance at the end of the season, where the defending champion and main round first EWE Baskets surprisingly failed in the first round of the 2009/10 play-offs . After the disappointing departure, Gardner's contract in Oldenburg was not renewed.

Gardner then ended his active career in 2010 after he did not receive any contract offers after his injuries, and became a basketball coach. After working for a high school team in his hometown, he became an assistant coach with the Ramblers at Loyola University Chicago in 2011 . After two years he moved in the same position to the Tigers at the University of Memphis . After just one year, he returned to his hometown in 2014 and was the coach in charge of the Jaguars at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), which as a member of the Summit League also play in Division I of the NCAA.
