John Bryant (born June 13, 1987 in Berkeley , California ) is a German - American basketball player who was under contract with the Giessen 46ers in the Bundesliga basketball division until 2020 . Previously played for Ratiopharm Ulm and FC Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga . John Bryant holds the position of the center .

Career

As a talented center, John Bryant joined Santa Clara University in 2005 , whose college team plays in the NCAA . Many critics feared that, with his 375 pounds at the time, he would not fit into the requirements profile of an athletic player and would therefore find it very difficult to assert himself in the league, which is known for its many highly talented basketball players. But his development showed a far more positive gait, so that Bryant was the second best rebounder of the season in his senior year and was named Player of the Year at the West Coast Conference . In his senior year of the college league, he collected the most double doubles (26 total). The following season John Bryant played with the Erie Bay Hawks in the D-League , the youth division of the NBA .

In 2010, Bryant signed a one-year contract with Ratiopharm Ulm , where he was the most effective and strongest player in the league with an average of just under 11 rebounds and 14.7 points per game. He made it into the BBL All-First-Team both in the 2010/11 season and in the 2011/12 season and was named the best player ( Most Valuable Player ) of the main round in the 2011/12 season .

On March 24, 2011, John Bryant extended his current contract in Ulm by two more years until 2013. Bryant was also appointed to the All-Star Team of the BBL in the 2012/2013 season. Bryant was also voted the most valuable player in the main round and for the first time also named the best attacking player in the league. After Ulm was eliminated in the 2013 play-offs in the semifinals, Bryant announced his departure from Ulm to take the chance to fight for international titles with another team.

On July 2, 2013, Bryant signed a two-year contract with Bundesliga club Bayern Munich , with whom he became German champions in the 2013/14 season . In the 2014/15 season he reached the final of the playoffs again with FC Bayern Munich, but had to admit defeat to Brose Baskets 2: 3. Bryant then extended his expiring contract for another two years to June 30, 2017. Nevertheless, he terminated his contract early in order to sign for the 2016/17 season in Spain with the Valencia Basket Club . In October 2016, Valencia announced their sacking after just two games due to Bryant being overweight. Bryant then signed for two months with the French first division club AS Monaco in November 2016 . After a period without a club, he moved to the Bundesliga club Gießen 46ers in September 2017 . In the 2017/18 season he was always in the "top five" in 34 Bundesliga appearances for Mittelhessen and scored an average of 18.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per match. Both were team-internal maximum values and the latter was also the league top value in the main Bundesliga round.

In mid-December 2018, Bryant took German citizenship and from then on had the passports of Germany and the United States.

On July 8, 2020 it was announced that Bryant was leaving Giessen. During his time with Mittelhessen, he scored an average of 18.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per match in Bundesliga games.
