Per Günther (born February 5, 1988 in Giessen ) is a German basketball player .

The 1.84 m tall point guard has been playing for the Bundesliga club Ratiopharm Ulm in the basketball division since the 2008/09 season .

career

Günther played as a teenager for Boele-Kabel and the BBV Hagen. For the BBV he was also active in its men's team in the regional league before he went to Phoenix Hagen in 2006 . There he made his debut in the 2nd basketball league and continued to play in the youth field: In 2007 he was German runner-up with the Hagen U19 team.

In the 2007/08 game year Günther impressed in the second division with averages of 14.5 points, 2.4 assists and 1.9 rebounds per match and was then signed by Ratiopharm Ulm . He was awarded a three-year contract by the Bundesliga club. In his first year in Ulm, Günther was given almost 15 minutes' playing time per match from head coach Mike Taylor . Over the years Günther developed into a core player in the playmaker position and became team captain. In April 2011, he decided to extend his contract for another two years in Ulm, whose team moved to the ratiopharm arena for the 2011/12 season . In the 2011/12 season he reached the Bundesliga final series with Ulm, where however Bamberg lost 3-0. Günther achieved average values ​​of 10.3 points as well as 3.0 basket assists and 1.7 rebounds per encounter in 42 missions during the runner-up season.

On May 21, 2013 it was announced that Per Günther had extended his contract with Ulm for two more years. Another contract extension for another two years was announced on April 26, 2015.

In the 2015/16 season he and his team reached the final series of the German championship for the second time after 2012, despite a weak start, in which the Ulm team, however, had to admit defeat to Bamberg 3-0. On December 11, 2016, Per Günther announced another contract extension, with which he tied himself to Ulm until 2019. In April 2019 he played his 400th Bundesliga game for Ulm and became the first player to reach such a large number of games for a single team.

National team

Günther took part in the European basketball championships with the U-16, U-18 and U-20 national teams in 2004, 2006 and 2008, respectively. On July 1, 2009, national coach Dirk Bauermann nominated the senior national team , Günther played his first international match on August 7, 2009 against the Netherlands. On September 1, 2009, he broke a metatarsal bone in a preparatory game against Slovenia and fell out for the European Championship in Poland. For the basketball world championship 2010 in Turkey, Per Günther was appointed to the squad by national coach Dirk Bauermann. Günther then also took part in the EM 2013. In the summer of 2014 he did not play for the national team due to knee problems and in 2015 he canceled due to physical complaints. In the following years he was no longer a member of the DBB selection.

Private

Günther's father, Dietmar, played in the Bundesliga himself, and his mother also played the sport. His brother Philip, who was three years older than him, played in the 2nd Bundesliga basketball division, while his brother Jasper , who was eleven years younger than him , made it to the Phoenix Hagen squad in 2017.

In July 2016, Günther married his long-time girlfriend Leonie in Hagen.
