Simon Schmitz (born February 17, 1990 in Berlin ) is a former German basketball player . He played 162 Bundesliga games for Bayreuth. In the 2009/2010 season he was named “Young Player of the Year” by the 2. Bundesliga ProA .

life and career

Club career

Simon Schmitz grew up in Bad Bergzabern and began his career at BIS Baskets Speyer , where he played with Elias Harris for a long time . In the 2008/2009 season he was appointed with an average of 21.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists in the NBBL Allstar selection of the South. But also in the Pro B he achieved good results with 14.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Due to his good performance, he moved to Science City Jena for the 2009/2010 season . There he scored 30 points in his first game against UBC Hannover . With an average of 12.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists in October, he was named Player of the Month and with an average of 10.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game, he was named Young Player of the Year the ProA 2009/10 selected. Then he dared the step to the BBC Bayreuth in the top German league . He recorded the best statistical values ​​of his time in Bayreuth in the 2012/13 game year, when he received an average playing time of around 15 minutes per game in the Bundesliga and scored an average of 5.5 points.

In 2015 he moved from Bayreuth to the Gladiators Trier in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA . In the second division season 2017/18 Schmitz achieved a points average of 12.3, which was the highest value of his time in Trier. In March 2020 he retired from competitive sports.

National team

Simon Schmitz went through all youth national teams of the German basketball federation and took part with the U-20 at the European championship in Zadar , Croatia from July 8th to 18th, 2010. There his team prevented relegation to group B, and he scored the all-important three in the final seconds to defeat Spain.

Personal

He is the son of Horst Schmitz , who worked as a coach in the basketball league for the BG Karlsruhe . His brother Aaron Schmitz also plays basketball and was under contract with USC Heidelberg in the ProA.
