Horst Schmitz

Horst Schmitz (born July 14,  1963 in Speyer ) is a German basketball coach and former player. He played six full international matches for the German national team.

career

Schmitz played in the youth team of TSV Speyer , and in 1978 he made the leap into the German national cadet team. In 1982, the 1.90 meter tall player took part in the Junior European Championship, a year later in the Junior World Championship.

With Bayer Leverkusen he won the German championship four times and also played in the European Cup for the Rhinelander and took part in a tournament in Brazil with the German national team in spring 1988 and made six appearances in the national jersey during this event. After leaving Leverkusen, Schmitz went to Alba Berlin , after which he returned to Speyer in 1991 and strengthened his home club in the 2nd Bundesliga. From then on he worked full-time as a commercial agent for a building society . In the 2003/04 season he made a brief return to the Bundesliga when, at the age of 40, he  helped out in two top German league games at BG Karlsruhe .

From 2004 Schmitz was assistant coach in Karlsruhe, when the club separated from Uwe Sauer in December 2005 , Schmitz was promoted to head coach. In mid-December 2006 he resigned from his position. In the 2007/08 season he coached the BIS Baskets Speyer as a coach in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB , in summer 2008 Schmitz was an assistant coach in the German team during the U18 European Championship in Greece. From 2015 to 2017 he worked as assistant trainer for BG Karlsruhe in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB.

His sons, Simon  and Aaron, followed in their father's footsteps and became competitive basketball players.
