Anton Gavel (born October 24, 1984 in Košice , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak - German basketball player and current coach.

Career

The 1.89 m tall and 87 kg heavy shooting guard played for the BK Chemosvit in his youth before he moved to Germany to the BG Karlsruhe in 2000 at the age of 15 . The young talent not only gained experience in the Bundesliga there, but also graduated from high school in 2004. From 2004 he ran two seasons for the 46ers from Gießen , for which he scored an average of 14.1 points in 69 league appearances and put up 2.7 assists. Thus, he was instrumental in reaching the playoff semifinals in 2005 and third place in the DBB Cup 2006. But he became the Rookie of the Year (Rookie of the Year) the BBL 2005/06 season selected.

After this breakthrough, the changed point guard for Spanish Erstligamannschaft Polaris World in Murcia . After two seasons he went on a basket hunt for the Greek club Aris from Thessaloniki in the 2008/2009 season . On November 12, 2009, the Brose Baskets from Bamberg signed the Slovakian as a replacement for the injured John Goldsberry . Gavel initially received a contract for one month, which was extended in January 2010 until the end of the season.

In August 2010 he received another two-year contract. He celebrated its greatest successes with the club and won the national double three times in a row in 2010, 2011 and 2012 . In the 2011/12 BBL season he was also individually named the best defender of the season. In the following season he won this award again and was also elected to the All-BBL First Team .

In the summer of 2014 he moved to the league competitor FC Bayern Munich . There Gavel signed a two-year contract. In July 2016, he signed a new working paper at FCB, dated until 2018, and celebrated his fifth German championship title in 2018. After twelve seasons in the BBL, Gavel announced his retirement at the end of August 2018 at the age of 33.

After his professional career

After the end of his professional career, Gavel works as a EuroLeague expert for the pay-TV broadcaster Telekom Sport . During the summer break of 2019, he took over the position of head coach for the ProB and NBBL teams in Ulm.
