Then he dared the step into professionalism and played for two years in the US leagues CBA and USBL. In 2004 he decided to move overseas and accepted an offer from the German Bundesliga club RheinEnergie Köln.

In the seasons 2006/2007, 2007/2008, 2008/2009, 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 he was named Best Defender of the Basketball Bundesliga . McElroy won the German championship with Cologne in 2006 . In 2008 he was able to repeat this success with Alba Berlin. He also won the German Cup three times (2005, 2007, 2009) and was voted several times in the BBL Allstar Game. As the only Alba player McElroy was elected to the All- Eurocup First Team of the 2009/10 season, after he had advanced with Alba to the final of this competition. For the club this meant the greatest international success since winning the Korać Cup in 1995 and McElroy's best result in a European competition. After the 2009/10 season he extended his contract with Alba for another year.

For the 2011/2012 season he moved within the league to the New York Phantoms Braunschweig . There he received a contract until 2013 and ultimately stayed in Braunschweig until the end of the 2014/15 season. On the 14th matchday of the 2014/15 season, he took first place as the best template provider in the all-time Bundesliga best list. As a person, McElroy was described by companions as quiet and reserved, as a basketball player as altruistic, versatile and reliable, as a model professional and fighter.

For the 2015/16 season he moved to Science City Jena in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA and won the championship title with the team. After Jena's promotion he was also a top performer in the Bundesliga. After the team was relegated in 2019, his contract was not extended.
