Ratiopharm Ulm ( proper spelling in lower case) is a German basketball club that currently plays in the 1st basketball league and emerged in 2001 from the sports club SSV Ulm 1846 . The club's home games are played in the Ratiopharm Arena . The main sponsor is the pharmaceutical company Ratiopharm , which has its headquarters in Ulm.
history
The team last appeared under the name SSV ratiopharm Ulm in the 2000/01 season, when it was still under the umbrella club of SSV Ulm 1846. In the course of the financial situation and the increasing independence of the club, the basketball club was spun off and with the re-establishment of Basketball Ulm / Alb-Donau GmbH (later BBU'01 GmbH) by Thomas Stoll , Andreas Oettel , Ralf Buck and Werner Sailer from scratch on restructured. While Buck and Sailer left later, Stoll and Oettel became the builders of the upswing in Ulm basketball in the years that followed. Since the 2001 season the name of the team playing in the 2nd basketball league at that time has been Ratiopharm Ulm.
2005/2006 season: Promotion to the Bundesliga
The return to the basketball league succeeded in 2006. With only one defeat, the club was able to prevail against the direct competitor Science City Jena .
2008/2009 season: First playoff participation in 10 years
Since the promotion, the team has been able to establish itself safely in the midfield of the league and even managed to get into the play-offs of the main round in the 2008/09 season . This was the first participation in the finals in ten years.
2011/2012 season: ratiopharm Arena and participation in the finals
With the greatest upheaval of the club in the 2011/12 season, which was associated with the move to the Ratiopharm Arena and was also accompanied by a change of coach, the team managed to complete the main round as runners-up and the subsequent playoffs as runners-up. Coach Thorsten Leibenath and his team were also able to achieve third place in the BBL Cup at the Top Four in Bonn. All playoff and season main round games in the Kuhberghalle and the new Ratiopharm Arena were sold out, which represents a 91.6 percent increase in viewers over the entire season compared to the 2010/11 season.
2012/2013 season: entry into the cup final
In the 2012/2013 season, the Ulm basketball players made it to the BBL Cup final, where they lost to Alba Berlin. In the championship round they reached the semi-finals, where they finally lost to the EWE Baskets Oldenburg .
2013/2014 season: Cup final in its own arena
In 2013/2014, Ulm was able to establish itself again in the top group of the league. Head coach Leibenath's men ended the regular season in sixth place. In the playoff quarter-finals, Ulm then met Alba Berlin . Against the Albatrosses, Ulm was eliminated with 1: 3 wins. In the cup, they made it into the final in their own hall. There, too, the team was defeated by the Alba Berlin team.
2014/2015 season: Participation in the semi-finals again
In the 2014/2015 season, the playoffs of the basketball Bundesliga were reached again. After a 3-2 win in the series against Telekom Baskets Bonn, the team lost 3-0 to Brose Baskets Bamberg in the semi-finals .
The subsequent signings Brion Rush and especially the Greek international Ian Vougioukas , who joined Ulm from Galatasaray in January 2015 , had a decisive influence on the late success of this season . Both players, however, like most of the squad, left the club at the end of the season.
2015/2016 season: return to the final
The beginning of the 2015/16 season was associated with a major change in personnel in the squad - only Per Günther , Joschka Ferner and a few young players were again in the squad compared to the previous season. The start of the season was catastrophic and after a false start with seven defeats from the first nine encounters, the squad was decisively strengthened by the former NBA professional Chris Babb and Pierria Henry .
Nevertheless, the seventh place in the table in the basketball Bundesliga was reached, which was associated with a renewed entry into the playoffs. In the quarter-finals of the playoffs they won against the table runner-up, EWE Baskets Oldenburg with 1: 3 and thus moved into the semi-finals against the third Frankfurt / Main . Surprisingly, Ulm also prevailed 3: 1 there and moved into the 2016 final against top of the table Bamberg . The Ulm team lost this 3-0 and became runner-up for the third time.
2016/2017 season: Ulm chasing records
With 25 victories in a row, the team set the Leverkusen Bundesliga start record from the 1969/70 season on March 12, 2017. On the following match day, a new Bundesliga record was achieved with a victory over Berlin. The victory against Brose Bamberg on March 26, 2017 broke a series of victories for the Bamberg team that had lasted more than two years (at least at home games against German teams). Ulm's Bundesliga winning streak ended on April 8 (68: 83 defeat against Bayern Munich) after having won 27 games. The team was the main round winner and was eliminated in the semifinals against Oldenburg.
2017/18 season: step backwards
During the summer break, İsmet Akpınar moved from Berlin to Ulm. With the development player, Per Günther became the best young player of the 2016/2017 Bundesliga season. The Ulm team recorded 16 wins and 18 defeats during the Bundesliga point round, which was only enough for tenth place in the table, which meant that the championship round was missed.
Season 2018/19
In November 2018, construction work began on the youth, performance and club center on the Neu-Ulm bank of the Danube, the cost of which was estimated at more than 23 million euros. During the current season, namely in March 2019, a change in the sporting leadership was decided with regard to the following season: It was announced that after eight years in office, coach Leibenath will take over the post of sporting director at the beginning of the 2019/20 round In this way, together with sports director Thomas Stoll, to lead “the sporting orientation of the professional team” and, in particular, to promote the promotion of young players. The long-term goal was to be one of the top addresses in promoting talent in Europe. At the same time, the search for a new coach began, whose tasks would include involving the young players. The end of the season overtook Ulm in the quarter-finals, when they failed to win three games against Alba Berlin.
Season 2019/20
The former captain of the Slovenian national team, Jaka Lakovič , has been appointed head coach. The Ulm team management combined with the commitment the expectation to continue the development of young players. In March 2020, the season was suspended due to the spread of COVID-19 . Until then, Ulm had a balanced record of ten wins and ten defeats in the Bundesliga. That put them in tenth place in the table. After a three-month break, the season was resumed in June 2020 as a tournament. Ulm reached the semi-finals, where the team was eliminated against Ludwigsburg.
Season 2020/21
In the summer of 2020, the management announced that due to the economic uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic , a considerable cut in the team budget was to be expected and major cost-cutting measures were inevitable. In mid-July 2020 the business premises in the youth, performance and club center on Neu-Ulm bank of the Danube were moved into.
homestead
Since December 2011, the Ratiopharm Arena in Neu-Ulm, with a capacity of 6,000 spectators, has been the home ground of ratiopharm Ulm. For basketball games, the multifunctional hall offers 4,000 seats, 1,500 standing places on a stand-alone grandstand and 500 VIP seats, spread over business areas, VIP areas and the box balcony.
The impetus for building such a hall came from Ratiopharm Ulm itself. The formerly used Kuhberghalle no longer met the demands of the basketball league . Until the end of the main round in the 2008/09 season, the school sports hall on the Ulmer Kuhberg officially offered 3000 standing and seated seats, with significantly more standing room tickets sold than the officially available 1000 for top games like against Tübingen or Berlin . The unavailable space also ignited the dispute over a new venue for the Ulm basketball players, because the Kuhberghalle had long since ceased to meet the league's growing demands. In the course of this, after long negotiations with the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm, it was decided on November 11, 2009 to build a new multifunctional hall on the festival site in Neu-Ulm.
To bridge the time until the opening of the Ratiopharm Arena, the Kuhberghalle was rebuilt for 293,000 euros. The east and west grandstands were completely redesigned and the very narrow entrance area, which was previously on the west side, was relocated to the east grandstand side, creating significantly more space for standing guests. The east stand had already been put into operation during the 2009 finals.
The opening game in the multifunctional arena took place on December 10, 2011, the 12th matchday of the 2011/12 season , with a game against EWE Baskets Oldenburg and was broadcast live by Sport1 . The game sold out within four hours and was won 101-83. A test run for all season ticket holders had already taken place on December 5, 2011 with a test match against the Kirchheim Knights .
successes
The club's greatest successes so far have been the cup victory in 1996 and the runner-up in 1998, which were then achieved under the name SSV ratiopharm Ulm with long-time player Jarvis Walker .
- Cup wins: 1 (1996)
- Cup finals: 2 (2013, 2014)
- German runner-up: 3 (1998, 2012, 2016)

For ratiopharm Ulm as a club, the 2011/12 season is an outstanding one in several respects. On the one hand, the long-awaited move to the ratiopharm arena was imminent; on the other hand, with Thorsten Leibenath as the new trainer and a significantly increased budget, the overall situation is fundamentally different. With Per Günther , Roderick "Rocky" Trice and John Bryant three starters could be held for the current season. The signing of power forward Dane Watts is especially important for the strength under the basket. As in the previous year, the point guard position with Günther and Mason-Griffin (24 and 21 years old) is very young.

The 2010/2011 season was marked by fewer departures compared to the previous season. It was clear to see that all positions or their rough classification were covered by a player in the squad from the previous season. Per Günther played in position 1, Lee Humphrey in position 2, Robin Benzing in position 3 and Coleman Collins in position 4 (at that time also at position 5). With the addition of John Bryant and Sean Sonderleiter, the big positions played important roles this season, which were further emphasized by the rule changes, such as moving the three-point line to 6.75 meters. The more accurate and fast wingers, who are even more difficult to defend due to the growing space, also benefited from this. The forwards had the important task of closing the larger gap between wing and board players or keeping it as small as possible. After a weak start to the season, those responsible reacted and brought Roderick "Rocky" Trice, a player from the previous season, back into the squad. He initially received a fixed-term contract of 1.5 months, which could be extended to a two-year contract through sponsorship.
Newcomer Walt Baxley from the Saar-Pfalz Braves left the club at his own request in December 2010. After the long-standing ratiopharm guard Christian Grosse ended his career in January 2011 after completing his studies, the team announced in March that Tommy Mason-Griffin from the American D-League was to be tested as a back-up with future prospects. At the same time it became known that Dan Fitzgerald was returning to Ulm from the successful 2008/2009 season.
On April 20, 2011, head coach Mike Taylor announced at the press conference for the last home game against Bremerhaven that the club would not extend its contract, which was due to expire in the 2010/2011 season. Mike Taylor was then released from the rest of the training session by the management with immediate effect only a few hours later due to this unilateral action to the public. The last home game therefore took place without Taylor and was led in his place by assistant coach Olatunde Adekola.
A comprehensive cooperation within the framework of the Ulm Basketball Academy with the BG Illertal-Weißenhorn team from the Pro-B-League gave ratiopharm Ulm the opportunity to equip several perspective players with a double license and to train them in games in amateur classes, Pro B and Bundesliga. In the 2010/2011 season these were: Philip Vojkovic, Nicola Stevanovic, Marcel Heberlein, Nemanja Kekic, Andreas Wenzl and Michael Wenzl. The latter became an integral part of the Bundesliga team over the course of the season.

The team in the 2009/2010 season was characterized by many departures and newcomers. Above all, Jeff Gibbs must be mentioned at this point , who was considered the superstar by the team and the fans, but had not received a suitable offer for the coming seasons due to the small budget from ratiopharm Ulm. Most of the other players, who all had contracts until the end of last season, had chosen the same fate.
