Chris Babb (born February 14, 1990 in Topeka , Kansas ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, he played for the start of his professional career in the D-League and for the Boston Celtics in the highest-endowed professional league NBA . After he was unable to establish himself here in the medium term, he played in the basketball Bundesliga for the German first division club Ratiopharm Ulm from 2015 to 2017 .

Career

After childhood in his hometown, Babb's family moved to Texas , where he graduated from The Oakridge School in Arlington, Texas and then received a scholarship as an outstanding basketball player at Pennsylvania State University in the east coast state of the same name. Here Babb played for the college team Nittany Lions in the Big Ten Conference of the NCAA . Hardly used as a freshman , in his second year as a sophomore he was already a starter in the majority of games and as the second most successful thrower of his team from behind the three-point line, he proved his qualities as a distance throwing specialist. After the Nittany Lions had won the second most important NCAA postseason tournament National Invitation Tournament in the final against the Bears of Baylor University in 2009 with Babb , they completely missed the postseason in 2010 with the worst record of all teams in the Big Ten. Babb then returned to the Midwest and moved to Iowa State University , where he was active in the Big 12 Conference for the college team Cyclones after a year of break required by the NCAA regulations . The Cyclones had previously lost the German national player and distance throwing specialist Lucca Staiger in 2010 , who had prematurely started a professional career in the German basketball league. Under coach Fred Hoiberg , the Cyclones improved and for the first time since 2005 they reached the important national NCAA finals in both 2012 and 2013 . In 2012 they defeated the defending champion Huskies of the University of Connecticut , in which the German national player Niels Giffey was active, in their opening game , and prevented a new edition of the previous year's semi-final against the Wildcats of the University of Kentucky , which then defeated the Cyclones around Babb and followed the Huskies as title winners. After Royce White left the team, the Cyclones around team captain Melvin Ejim reached the NCAA finals again in 2013, where they were subsequently defeated by the Buckeyes of Ohio State University after an opening win against the Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame , what Babb's career in the NCAA finished after four seasons. The “3-and-D” specialist Babb received an award in his senior year with the appointment to the “Big 12 All- Defensive Team” of the best defenders in his conference.

In the 2013 NBA Draft , Babb was not selected by any team from the top-tier professional league, but he played for the Phoenix Suns in 2013 in the NBA Summer League . For the pre-season, the Boston Celtics signed him, but they released him after a month at the end of October before the start of the season. Instead, the Celtics farm team Maine Red Claws from Portland (Maine) gave him a contract for the season in the Minor League NBA Development League (D-League). In late February, Babb returned to the Celtics roster on two consecutive short-term contracts before finally getting a multi-year contract in late March. The Celtics, for which Babb still had 14 appearances with less than ten minutes of average playing time, clearly missed the 2013/14 NBA play-offs after only 25 wins this season in 82 games . After the NBA Summer League 2014, however, the Celtics broke the contract in the pre-season for the following season and Babb returned once again to the Maine Red Claws. In the D-League he was nominated for the all-star game of this league in February 2015, before he got another contract with the Celtics in April 2015. The Celtics immediately put Babb back to their farm team Red Claws, who reached the D-League play-offs with the best record of all teams, but in which they were defeated by defending champions Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the first round . Even afterwards, Babb was not used in any official game by the Celtics, who reached the play-offs of the NBA 2014/15 . Instead, the Celtics traded Babb along with Gerald Wallace for David Lee of the Golden State Warriors . At the then NBA champion, Babb was used in five preparation games before they released him from his contract a week before the start of the season.

After Babb had failed to establish himself in the NBA, he left his home country and moved to the German basketball league , in which his former teammates Tyrus McGee and Will Clyburn had already played, which like Babb back then as a "transfer" to the Iowa State Cyclones had come. After the move from Clyburn to Israel and the injury-related loss of Carlon Brown , the first division team ratiopharm Ulm started very weakly in the 2015/16 basketball Bundesliga and signed Chris Babb in mid-November. With Babb the Ulm team were able to start a race to catch up and reached the play-offs for the German championship in seventh place in the main round, in which they reached the final series after victories over the second EWE Baskets Oldenburg and the third Fraport Skyliners . Here, however, they remained without a win against defending champion Brose Bamberg . After the contract extension, Babb started again with the German runner-up in the EuroCup , in which the Ulm team met their German rivals FC Bayern Munich in the second group stage of the 16 best teams . If the team had at least one victory in six games in the 2015/16 Eurocup , the Ulmer, weakened after Tim Ohlbrecht's injury and a moderately deployed Per Günther substitute, even remained without a win in six games this time. In the national league things went much better and after victories, among others, against Bayern Munich and defending champion Brose Bamberg, they achieved a starting record of 27 wins in a row before the winning streak finally broke in early April in the league second leg against Bayern Munich, which the Ulm team had previously had defeated twice in the Eurocup. As the first in the main round, the Ulm team reached the play-offs for the championship of the basketball Bundesliga 2016/17 , in which Babb and his teammate Raymar Morgan were appointed to the “first team” of the five best players of the BBL season.

After further stints in Europe, Babb returned to Germany for the 2020/21 season and signed a contract with Telekom Baskets Bonn .
