Fredrick Kristian "Fred" Hoiberg (born October 15, 1972 in Lincoln , Nebraska ) is an American former basketball player and current coach. Most recently he was the head coach of the Chicago Bulls .
High school and college
During his time at Ames High School , Iowa , Hoiberg not only served on the school's basketball team, but also acted as the football team's quarterback . In 1991 Hoiberg led his team to the state championship and was named "Mr. Basketball "in Iowa. He then moved to Iowa State University . His first three years there he played under Johnny Orr , his last year of college under Tim Floyd .
Hoiberg was elected to the first team of the Big Eight Conference in 1995 and was one of the most popular athletes of all time at Iowa State University . In the 1993 mayoral election in Ames , he even received a few votes as a “write-in”, although he was not on the ballot paper. Then he got the nickname "The Mayor".
NBA
Hoiberg participated in the 1995 NBA Draft and was drawn 52nd by the Indiana Pacers . After four years with the Pacers, he moved to the Chicago Bulls in the summer of 1999 , where he was trained by his old coach Tim Floyd . In the summer of 2003, he finally moved to the Minnesota Timberwolves , where he made a name for himself as a dangerous three-point shooter. In 2005 he was the first player in the history of the NBA to lead the league from the three-point line in terms of hit rate and still not be allowed to take part in the three-point contest of the All-Star-Day.
Coaching career
In the summer of 2005, Hoiberg had to undergo heart surgery. Although the operation was successful, but after a brief comeback, Hoiberg decided to end his career and instead switch to the Timberwolves coaching staff. In April 2010 he took the job of head coach at Iowa State University , where he inherited Greg McDermott . From the 2015/16 season, Hoiberg was head coach for the Chicago Bulls, successor to Tom Thibodeau . On December 3, 2018, the Bulls separated from Hoiberg after starting the season with 5:19 games. During his time with the Bulls, Hoiberg only led the Bulls into the playoffs in 2017.
