Gavin Schilling (born November 10, 1995 in Munich ) is a German - American basketball player . He belongs to the team of the Bundesliga club Basketball Löwen Braunschweig . Schilling is in fourth position ( Power Forward ) and is 2.06 meters tall.

Career

Schilling first played football , later at school (Lycée Français de Chicago) in the USA, initially also American football, baseball and basketball.

In 2009 he moved to the Loyola Academy in Wilmette (State of Illinois ), where he was a member of the American football and basketball teams.

During the summer of 2010, which he spent in Germany, Schilling took part in a basketball camp near Munich and was placed with Ralph Junge , the head coach at the Urspring School at the time , which is part of a basketball boarding school. Junge offered Schilling a scholarship, which he accepted and then spent the 2010/11 season at the Urspring School and played for the U16 youth team of the SG Ursprunging School / Schelklingen. He won the German championship title in the German U16 Bundesliga JBBL with the team .

For the 2011/12 season Schilling returned to the United States, went to the De La Salle Institute in Chicago and played for its basketball team.

In the 2012/13 season he played for Findlay Prep, the team at the Henderson International School in Henderson, Nevada .

Schilling then began his college career at Michigan State University in 2013 . In his first season there (2013/14) he won the Big Ten Conference with the "Spartans" and reached the round of the last eight teams ( Elite Eight ) in the playoffs of NCAA Division 1 . In 2014/15 he advanced to Michigan State's top four teams in the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship ( Final Four ). In the early stages of the 2015/16 season, Schilling was sidelined due to a toe injury, after which he had back problems. In preparation for the 2016/17 season, he suffered a knee injury in October 2016, due to which he missed the entire game year.

In his final season 2017/18, Schilling, who was particularly praised for his qualities as a defender, was on the field for the Michigan State team in 34 games and averaged 2.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per encounter. At the end of June 2018 he signed his first professional contract with the Bundesliga club Ratiopharm Ulm . In his first year in Ulm he was used in 32 Bundesliga games and averaged 2.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per match. In 2019/20 he increased his values ​​to 5.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per encounter.

In the summer of 2020 he left Ulm for another Bundesliga club, the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig . As an important reason for his move to Lower Saxony, Schilling mentioned that he could play there under coach Peter Strobl , with whom he already worked in his first year in Ulm, when Strobl was assistant coach there.

National team

In April 2012 Schilling took part with the German U18 national team in the Albert Schweitzer tournament and in August of the same year in the U18 European Championship in Latvia and Lithuania .

Schilling's mother is American and comes from Chicago , his father Andreas Schilling is German and played in the handball Bundesliga . His godfather Rüdiger Neitzel won the silver medal with the national handball team at the 1984 Olympic Games.

After his birth, Gavin lived with his family in Strasbourg until 2003 and grew up trilingual (German, English, French). In 2003 he moved to Chicago with his mother and brother and attended a French school there until 2009.
