Dru Joyce (born January 29, 1985 in Akron , Ohio ) is a retired American basketball player . After studying in his hometown, he played professional basketball in Europe for 12 years before retiring in 2019. The point guard is with 1,714 assists the second best assist provider in the history of basketball league .

Career

In high school he played a. a. together with LeBron James in the team and won the national high school championship there. During his studies played Joyce for the college team, the University of Akron in the NCAA Division I. The Zips he was after his rookie year three seasons best assist provider, reaching over four seasons in addition to more than 1,000 scored points also more than 500 assists , which he tops the Zips leaderboard in assists.

After completing his studies, he and his teammate Romeo Travis of the same age were hired by the German Bundesliga basketball team ratiopharm from Ulm . After two seasons, the paths of longtime teammate, as Travis to league rivals separated Walter Tigers Tubingen changed while Joyce a contract in Polish Włocławek signed. After a season in the Polska Liga Koszykówki , he returned to the BBL in 2010 and signed a contract with TBB in Trier . In June 2011 Joyce extended his contract in Trier for another year.

For the 2012/2013 season Joyce moved within the league and signed a contract with EWE Baskets Oldenburg . He received a contract there until 2014. This was not renewed, so Joyce and the club separated in the summer of 2014. In the same summer he joined the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig .

After a year in Braunschweig, Joyce was unable to agree on a contract extension with those responsible and switched to s.Oliver Baskets in Würzburg . There he received a one-year contract.

In the 2015/2016 season, Joyce was selected as the starter at the BBL All-Star Game on January 9, 2016 in the Bamberg Brose Arena . For Joyce it means the first All-Star participation. At the same time he became the first Würzburg player to be in the starting five of the All-Star game .

On January 15, 2016, Dru Joyce became the player in Bundesliga history with 1,322 assists who gave the most assists, but had to cede this title to Jared Jordan on February 25, 2017.

In the summer of 2016, captain Dru Joyce and the s.Oliver Baskets Würzburg parted ways after the first year. Joyce moved to Zmoki Minsk and took on the next challenge in Belarus before returning to Germany in March 2017 and signing a contract with FC Bayern Munich until the end of the 2016/17 season. At the end of the season he left Germany and joined AS Monaco in the French Ligue Nationale de Basket . After playing only six games for the Monegasque, he moved to league rivals Limoges CSP until the end of the season .

At the beginning of September 2018 he returned to Germany and received a two-month contract with Bundesliga club Science City Jena , which he then extended until the end of the season. With 10.1 points and 6.3 assists per game, he was a top performer in the Saalestädtern, but could not prevent relegation at the end of the season. In August 2019 it was announced that he end his career as an assistant coach at the Cleveland State University would go.
