Charles Barton (basketball coach)

Charles William Barton (born March 26, 1947 in Columbus ) is an American - Swedish basketball coach and former player.

career

Barton played basketball at Kent State University in his native USA and graduated with a degree in political science. As a professional basketball player, Barton worked in Germany (Munich), Sweden (Gammelstad / Plannja, Solna) and Switzerland (Geneva). In Sweden he met his future wife Ann-Marie. The sons Charles and Brandon became basketball professionals.

As head coach, Barton was in charge of the Swedish national team from 1983 to 1991, until 1996 he worked as a coach at the Swedish club Plannja, and in the 1996/97 season he was the head coach of SSV Ulm in the basketball league . Barton then looked after the club New Wave in Sweden and then in 1998/99 M7 Borås (also Sweden), where "Magic" Johnson was one of his players for a short time .

From 2000 to 2002 Barton was the coach of the Danish national team, in the 2000/01 season he was also the coach of the Danish team Magic Great Danes, which competed in the NEBL European Cup, in the 2001/02 season he was an assistant coach under David Blatt on the staff of Israeli top team Maccabi Tel Aviv . From autumn 2003 to 2005 he worked as the head coach of the Greek club Aris Thessaloniki . In 2004 he led Aris to win the national cup competition.

In January 2006, Barton was hired by Bundesliga club Skyliners Frankfurt  as head coach. In March 2007 he was released in Frankfurt after a series of sporting failures. During the 2007/08 season, Barton was first coach of Apoel Nicosia and then Proteas EKA AEL Limassol in Cyprus .

In 2008/09 he was assistant coach of Gothia Basket in the first division of Sweden, in the summer of 2010 he took over the position of head coach at the Polish first division club AZS Koszalin, and in mid-October 2010 there was another separation.

In April 2011 he was introduced as the new coach of LF Basket (first division Sweden), he remained in office until spring 2013. He then worked temporarily as an assistant coach for the first division club Eco Örebro.

For the 2017/18 season Barton took over the coaching position at the Swedish second division club Djurgården. With the team he was promoted to the first division of Sweden in 2019, in the first half of the 2019/20 season his two sons Brandon and Charles the Younger were part of his squad. When the 2019/20 game year was canceled in March 2020 due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus , Barton and Djurgården were bottom of the table in the Swedish first division.
