David Michael Blatt ( Hebrew דייוויד בלאט Russian Дэ́вид Блатт ; Born May 22, 1959 in Louisville , Kentucky ) is an American - Israeli basketball coach and former player.

He is one of the most successful coaches in European basketball history. Blatt's greatest successes as a coach include winning the 2007 European basketball championship and winning the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games with the Russian national team .

As a club coach, Blatt won numerous national titles in Israel, especially with Maccabi Tel Aviv , before he became head coach of the NBA after winning a triple crown from a national double and winning the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 . This makes him one of the first coaches to become head coach in the most highly endowed professional league, the NBA, without having previously gained experience as a player or assistant coach .

Career as a player

Blatt played as point guard at Princeton University for their college team Tigers between 1977 and 1981, with whom he won the Ivy League championship as a team captain in the senior year against the Quakers of the University of Pennsylvania , against whom one in the previous year Had lost one point in the final. At the national finals in 1981 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) you were eliminated in the first round against the Cougars of Brigham Young University .

As a member of the US team he participated in the Maccabiah part 1981, which was won by the US selection. He then stayed in Israel and played for various Israeli clubs. After tearing his Achilles tendon ten years later, he began to focus on coaching.

Career as a coach

Blatt began coaching while he was still active. He took his first steps as a coach in the youth departments of the clubs where he was under contract. After the end of his playing career, he became a coaching assistant at Hapoel Galil Elyon from the Galilean Kfar Blum , which in 1993 won the championship from Maccabi Tel Aviv for the first time in 23 years. The new coach was fired during the 1993/94 season and Leaf stepped in as an interim coach before master coach Pini Gershon returned to Hapoel the following season.

In the 1995/96 season, sheet was then head coach and was named coach of the year in the Israeli League. He then took on additional responsibility for the Israeli junior national team before becoming an assistant to the Israeli men's national team in 1997 .

In 1999 Gershon became head coach of the dominant Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv and Blatt was his assistant at Hapoel Galil as in the 1994/95 season. After winning the FIBA Suproleague in 2001, Blatt gave up his job at the Israeli Association for the time being and became Maccabi's head coach. When there were no further international successes, Gershon moved back to the sidelines and was again head coach, while sheet moved as an assistant in the second tier.

After winning the ULEB Euroleague in 2003/04 , Leaf left Maccabi and became the head coach of the Israeli national team. At the same time, he moved to Russia as a club coach and became head coach of the newly founded Dynamo club in Saint Petersburg . With this team, which had taken over the license from Avtodor Saratov , they were allowed to start internationally and won the FIBA Europe League 2005 unbeaten . Because of disputes over his coaching license, he finally resigned as the Israeli national team coach.

In the 2005/06 season sheet coached the team from Benetton Treviso in the Italian Serie A and led them to the national double . Then sheet was appointed head coach of the Russian national team, which he surprisingly led to the title at the 2007 European Championships after a final victory against the favored hosts Spain . This was the first title after the collapse of the Soviet Union , whose national basketball team of the USSR is the record holder of the European championships. He was less successful with his Italian club. The defending champion was deducted twelve points in the championship, so that he ended up in eleventh place instead of fifth and missed the play-offs for the championship.

Sheet as Russian national coach (2011)

After a year with the Turkish club Efes Pilsen in Istanbul and the unsuccessful 2008 Olympic Games with the Russian national team, Blatt trained a Russian team with Dynamo Moscow and reached the national cup final in 2009. After a six-month commitment at the Greek club Aris Thessaloniki 2010, Blatt returned to Maccabi Tel Aviv. After the 2010 World Cup , Blatt wanted to give up his job as Russian national coach, but at the insistence of the association officials he stayed and achieved third place with the Russian team at the 2011 European Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games .

As coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv, Blatt won the Israeli double in 2011 and 2012 as well as the Adriatic League in 2012. After missing the Israeli championship title in 2013, they not only won both national titles again in the 2013/14 season, but also surprised in the Final Four tournament the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 , when the title was won against the favored teams of CSKA Moscow and Real Madrid . After winning a triple crown in 2004 as an assistant to Pini Gershon , this was his first title win in all major club competitions in a season as a responsible coach ten years later.

After the end of the season, Blatt announced his departure as coach of Maccabi and was introduced as the new coach of the NBA club Cleveland Cavaliers in June 2014 . Although he was born in the United States himself, he is considered to be the first coach who was able to immediately take over an NBA club as head coach just because of his coaching experience in Europe and as a national coach. Colleagues like Mike D'Antoni or the Italian Ettore Messina , who also acted as future NBA head coach, had already worked in the coaching staff of an NBA club before they became head coach of an NBA club. Leaf led Cleveland in the 2015 NBA playoff series, where his team lost to the Golden State Warriors with 1: 4 wins.

On January 22, 2016 sheet was sacked by the Cleveland Cavaliers , then the team won the NBA championship under his successor Tyronn Lue in the same season . Cleveland then sent Blatt a master's ring in recognition of his work. As an NBA coach, he achieved a total of 83 wins (with 40 defeats). In Cleveland, in particular, his difficult relationship with LeBron James , who was more important for the club than he was as a coach, was his fate. From the 2016/17 season he coached the Turkish club Darüşşafaka SK Istanbul . Under his leadership, the team won the EuroCup in the 2017/18 season. Leaf became the first coach to win the European Championship, the Euroleague and the EuroCup.

In June 2018, Blatt signed a two-year contract as head coach of the Greek team Olympiacos Piraeus . On August 19, 2019, he announced that he had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis , but emphasized that he wanted to continue working as a trainer. Two months later, he separated from Olympiacos. It is in the interests of both sides to separate, said Blatt in a statement.

In December 2019, he became a consultant at the New York Knicks , where his former Princeton teammate Steve Mills holds the presidency, and at the same time announced the end of his coaching career. His work as a consultant for the New York team ended in April 2020. At the end of May 2020, Blatt, as a co-owner of a group of companies, became a shareholder in the Czech first division club Basket Brno.
